Photographer's Note

This photograph is taken at Ueno, Tokyo in the morning. Ueno belongs to the downtown area in Tokyo and many train lines and subways have ridden in Ueno Station as a vestibule leading to the outside of the north in Tokyo. As for the circumference of a station, there is divided clearly by two zones of shopping quarter where store stand in a row greatly and cultural facilities such as the park, the art museum, the concert hall, etc. This photograph was taken in front of Sogakudo located in the end of a park. Sogakudo concert hall was built in 1890 as a school building for Tokyo Music School, which is now the Music Department of Tokyo University of the Arts. The hall made a significant contribution to the development of modern music in Japan. In 1987, the deteriorating building was rebuilt at the present location by Taito City and was designated as an Important Cultural Property by the Japanese government in 1988. Sogakudo is still used as a concert hall and the gallery on the first floor exhibits collections of music documentation. The student of the nearby high school passed the passage in front of building as if nothing happen.

Hi dear Mikio. Like for the carefree young everywhere, the past is of rare or no interest in the fast moving present. These two have more immediate things to talk about- boys, I would guess. The older generation is making sure that when the young grow up there will be waiting for their pleasure buildings like this one which will teach them about the past and their heritage. I like this building and the nice tones of light brown, grey and green of the photo. The trees and soft light give me an impression of a pleasant and leafy street with nice shade. You did very well to wait for the girls to come walking by. They add so much to the composition.

The compo reveals the proud looking building and your narrative adds bit of of the local history. A peaceful scene within the urban scape - i love the perspective with strong architectural lines, the cool colour effect and the tight framing with goof natural framing. Simple design but not lacking of its own charm, the striking figures are effective eye puller giving some indication of the building size. A real cool shot compositionally well done, Congrats. tfs

Very nice facade of a 100+ year old building. The building looks well kept and very pretty. The inclusion of students walking in front of it has drawn the attention to them, making the tighter framing quite pleasant. Good timing, nice rendering.
