Photographer's Note
The Tokyo Resurrection Cathedral is the main cathedral of the Japanese Orthodox Church.
The Eastern Orthodox Church was introduced to Japan in the 19th century by a Russian Orthodox priest Nikolai Kasatkin, also known as "Saint Nikolai of Japan". The Byzantine style building of the Tokyo Resurrection Cathedral was built under the leadership of Nikolai in 1891.
Nikolai had been engaged in missionary work in Japan until his death in 1912. Since that, the cathedral has been commonly known as "Nikorai-do (The temple of Nikolai)" in commemoration of Nikolai's lifetime.
The cathedral had survived the carpet-bombing during the WW2. Today it is widely loved by Japanese people regardless of difference of religious backgrounds.
