Photographer's Note
February 2006, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Women waiting for a bus in central Kuala Lumpur. The posters behind the Malay women, "Emas" and
"Surat Pajak" can be found plastered all over the parts of Malaysia I visited and refer to something about gold and lease letters.
Edit: Thanks to Ewan who has informed me that the signs refer to a pawn shop.

Hi Michael - I do like this a lot. The woman's expression is so proud and strong, as is her pose. I like the hand. Having the other two women creates a lovely soft echoing effect of the main subject. Love the inclusion of the sign but sorry, I can't explain why:) Dof is exceptional and the tonal range is very good.

Emas and Surat Pajak, eh, Mike? It's really is a sign in front of a pawn shop. If you are observant enough, you should have also seen shops with 'Ar-Rahn' signage. They are also pawn shop, but operated with Islamic principles or 'syariah'.
Back to the shot. Love the moody B&W, light sepia hues. They make the pattern on the woman's dress stand out, albeit lack of colour.

Good, really good, Mike. BW in Malaysia, I'm here almost on my own grounds...
Love that fading threesome compo, good dof, the 105 does a good job for that... and the sign on top which gives another element of context and provides some viewing in an otherwise empty area, it helps a diagonal reading too.
Nice clicking moment too, just at the edge, not looking at you, but still concentrated : not in a dead time, I mean.
My nitpick will probably be on the processing : it seems there's no solid black neither white areas, I only see dark grey and muddy bright.. in need for some more contrast if you ask me.

now this is beauty of tri-x, the last shot I commented on doesn't look like tri-x, but here the grain is fabulous.
Again a shot isn't all that complicated and it's beauty is in simplicity and craftsmanship, just a portrait of women, a bit of asian flavour, great textures of the film, pleasure to see.
Luko's workshop takes it up another notch.
