Photographer's Note
NO...NO...NO!!
these are coconut shells that resemble skulls, nothing more. bao in tagalog, paya in chabacano, bagol in cebuano, etc..
the coconut meat has been extracted from the shells and is turned into copra (dried coconut meat or kernel) which in turn are used to produce cooking oil, soap etc. copra came from the malayalam word kopra.
coconuts are one of so many produce that philippines is known for. coconut farming is common all over the archipelago- from aparri to jolo, so to speak.
wealthy filipinos own vast plantation of the same.

I actually see some funny faces in there and I never thought of skulls, Benedict ;-) You know that I like this kind of close approaches that give interesting patterns and this is also well succeeded. Nice textures, good quality shot.

Hey Ben,
When I looked at the title 'The Killing Fields', then down towards the image from the thumbnail reminds me of Cambodia. Seeming to bear little of it's gruesome past, asking myself 'Is this happening too in the Philippines'? I've read about the past regime of the old dictatorship, kidnapping and killings of those who opposses the system. As I looked closely, damn! You got me there for awhile. You should have included some 'husk' adding to dead hair as special effect! That title catched my attention yet very disturbing and devastatingly sad reminder of these mass killings. More eerrie is that these coconuts look small for an adult skull...
Good imagery, these raw materials are very popular, they use coconut inlays in furniture and even in interior finishes like mosaic trimmings, etc. They sell some furnishings in high end shops in Hong Kong!
Best Regards,
Jom

Benedict,
I was surfing around your photos and found this one ... very nice. I like that you have filled the image with the coconuts .. I try to accomplish the same effect with less success than yours. The cocmuts are pretty cool!
Nice shot.
