Il commence � faire s駻ieusement froid, malgr� tout le soleil est pr駸ent, mais ce sera la derni鑽e photo prise ce jour l� car mes doigts souffrent, cette fillette revenait de l '馗ole, � - 50C les 駘钁es sont dispens駸 de classe.. except駸 les petits du jardin d enfants dont les parents travaillent..

The weather starts to be seriously cold, despite everything the sun is present, but it will be the last photograph taken there this day because my fingers suffer, this young girl returned from L '馗ole, with - 50C the pupils are exempted of class. excluded the small ones of the garden D children whose parents work.

Brilliant shot. Beautiful soft light, tack-sharp focus on the eyes, the frost on her eyelashes (which matches her cap!), and off-center composition brings the viewer into the scene and makes this shot a winner.

The snowflake on her nose is an added bonus!

This shot also seems to serve as a testament to the resilience of the people living in that area. This child does not appear to be uncomfortable at all with the weather; just another winter day to her. Very well done. A favorite.

We are heading towards there too... here we have -30 usually when we say it is cold, rarely -40. But to me, that is just suicidal...
You did it. And you did it so beautifully! This girl is fallen from heaven, the snow looks like she has still some of her own feathers all over... an angel, from lovely Yakutia. (I have just talked to a friend who recently came back from there and said it was absolutely wonderful, the people were so kind and sweet)

Coucou Francine, je recommence le mot que j'avais commenc� avant que mon boss ne d饕arque dans mon bureau et que je ne ferme la fenetre en fin d'apr鑪 ;) alors 軋 y est rentr馥 de russie, qu'ils sont beaux tes 2 clich駸 / portraits !! En plus je constate que c'est ton 100鑪e upload de russie, un grand bravo.
Et quelle 100鑪e !!
Trop belle cette petite yakoute, c'est une pub pour la laine, il a l'air si chaud et doux son bonnet. La nettet� est impeccable, l'isolation du sujet parfaite, le crop nickel, une magnifique photo, je suis b饌t (enfin encore plus de l'autre mais j'arrive)
... tiens j'ai r饌lis� que naxius 騁ait ton fils, sacr馥 famille de photographes.

But it really doesn't matter, in Yakutia could be - 60 Celsius... But I'm afraid you know better about this part of Russia than I am. Actually, from Saint-Petersburg it's seven times shorter distance to Paris than to Yakutia. Never was there...(In Yakutia). I'm not sure that I'll ever will be there.

Wow Francine,

this is a great one! -49..I know exactly what that feels like, having lived through a bunch of winters where the temp has dipped to about -40 to -45 in Canada, and I tell you, I wouldnt be going outside then, camera or no camera. Respect for doing it and repect for your camera for working..I know my car was never functional at that extreme temperature, wiring freezing was the biggest problem. You did a fantastic job getting a good shot with beautiful crispness in these conditions. I wonder, what precautions did you take when coming back indoors.

My dear Francine, this one is even more striking than the last "frozen" one. Sorry about the comparison (the previous was already stellar), but the snow on the eyelashes here are just amazing. It is only 3 degrees colder but you can be sure that makes a difference. I love the overall predominance of white (it goes well with the mood), the fantastic skin tones and the definition of all this. The tight compo is great. Thanks

Bonjour, Francine. Il faut vraiment 黎re courageux pour braver de telles conditions pour se rendre � l'馗ole. A mon avis, nos t黎es blondes resteraient bien sagement calfeutr馥s � la maison. Le froid est bien perceptible avec de nouveau ce givre qui s'installe sur les fibres et sur les paupi鑽es (� mon avis, il ne faut pas trop cligner des yeux sous peine de ne pas pouvoir les rouvrir). Le visage se d騁ache tr鑚 bien sur l'arri鑽e-plan clair et la nettet� est excellente.

Extra ce portrait ! vraiment bravo !
Belles lignes de forces avec ce cadrage affirm� (peut-黎re un poil s駻� sur la droite ... pas grand chose).
j'aime aussi cette l馮鑽e touche de couleur qui ajoute bcp je pense.
avec un peu plus de contraste ce serait pas mal non plus, pour avoir un rendu un peu plus moelleux et un peu moins "plat" ... j'ai post� un WS ...
... une qualit� d'image qui progresse ;) ... m麥e si ton capteur est crado depuis 6 mois ... tout de m麥e dommage de faire des photos avec un capteur sale ...

Avec un peu de retard, meilleurs voeux pour 2007... photo de circonstance poru la saison, bien que l'on soit 60 degr駸 au dessus de cette temp駻ature...
Au moins, tu n'as pas loup� la mise au point, comme moi sur mon dernier post. Le gel, comm edes 騁oiles de neige, sur les sourcils c'set spectaculaire.

J'avais entendu qu'� partir de -40/-50, la temp駻ature pr駸entait de graves dangers d皛 en particulier au risque d'apparition de cristaux dans les poumons... Qu'en est-il r馥llement? Qu'est-ce que 軋 fait de subir -40 et moins?

This is a wonderful photograph, I can really feel the cold! Luckily I never experienced more than -32C but that was already REALLY cold! I cannot imagine to leave the house at -50C! A very good idea to shoot a close-up of the girl so one can even see the frost on her eye-lashes!

This close up photo is sharp - really well focused. Colours are beautiful and i love how you managed to capture the 'coldness' of this photo. I also love the way the photo is off centre and the small bit of pink and orange that she is wearing just cleverly gives the photo a hint of colour without distracting from how cold it is.

Hi Francine,

I admire everybody who is able to shoot portraits. Landscapes are easier, you have more time, less effort, you can repair it in Photoshop.
You have a gallery full of excellent portraits, congratulations for this.

Hi Francine,
I have just seen this shot and it is an amazing portrait. My favourite part of the shot is the ice on the childs lashes! The soft colouring and composition is great too. Simply a superb portrait! I can not even begin to imagine how cold -50 degrees is.

Chere Francine, je suis restee sans mots. Je trouve cette foto unique, je n-ai jamais vu tant de nettete et de beaute. Je me demandais ou la foto est prise, vue ton nom francais, apres j-ai vu que le lieu est Russie, et tout est devenu claire!

A wonderful photo here Francine...just amazing. Every exposed hair is covered in white and it had to be painfully cold. But she is still exuding a charm and sweetness in her eyes. It's also cute how she has that tiny little piece of ice on her nose. A great photo!
