In the next few hours in Hanoi, the sun will appear to cross the celestial equator, from north to south; this marks the beginning of autumn (or in Vietnamese, 杯hu ph穗�).

In the language of astronomy, an equinox is either of two points on the celestial sphere where the ecliptic and the celestial equator intersect. This is one of two times a year when the sun is above the equator and night and day are of approximately equal length; the word equinox is often used to refer to either of these dates. The equinoxes are not fixed points on the celestial sphere but move westward along the ecliptic, passing through all the constellations of the zodiac in 26,000 years. They are the two days each year when the center of the Sun spends an equal amount of time above and below the horizon at every location on Earth. The word equinox derives from the Latin words aequus (equal) and nox (night).

Actually, an equinox begins when the sun reaches the celestial longitude of 180ｰ and ends when it reaches the longitude of 195ｰ. In the Gregorian calendar, it usually begins around September 23 and ends around October 8, so the vernal equinox and the autumnal equinox signify the middle of spring and autumn, respectively, unlike in Western cultures.

As a result, fall equinox is the most romantic time in Hanoi葉he precious period that appears in many poems and songs.
