Hoeke - Damme

Hoeke and Damme, 5 km from Zeebrugge, are flooded with different types of geese in the winter months.
They stay almost all winter unless there is a lot of snow, then they continue to France
In Belgium, the hunters are not allowed to shoot at these geese, but in France, regular hunters or fake hunters are shot

I think I have also seen gray geese, the most common representative in the Netherlands, and the prototype, of the group of gray or gray geese.

This genus contains many species that mainly have black feathers, black head and black, long neck. Typical for this type of black geese is the white band from the throat to the cheeks. The black neck changes into a whitish chest. This is in contrast to the species of the Anser genus. The plumage is the same for both sexes. The body length is 55 to 100 cm and the weight 3 to 6 kg.
These predominantly herbivorous birds spend the night on the water and eat during the day, both on the water and on land. Their food consists mainly of grasses, seeds and grain. It has also been observed that they also consume animal food such as the eggs of the common thief (Sterna hirundo), flies (Ephydra hians) and shellfish such as the little nun (Macoma balthica).
The female lays 4 to 8 white eggs, which are incubated for about 30 days.

Hello John,
The enormous flocks of geese look quite fantastic. We see them in a very scenic area on a day with beautiful light and colours. You composed the photo in very nice proportions between ground and sky, with the geese filling both areas.

Hallo John, the geese flock in that flat land to eat the grass, the seeds and the grains. It is a good news to hear they are not hunted and spend some months peacefully in Belgium. Splendid nature shot. Fine colors, good sharpness, instructive photo note, regards.

I can see that you have plenty of photographs in your archives, never shown before. The main idea is to feel positive about each image that brings us back in time to the place of origin. Lovely to see so many birds taking winter break in the fields of the north part of Europe. Hunting is still allowed in many parts, but illegal killing is the most disturbing. Tfs !!!

Hello John,

It would seem that Flanders is very much like Quebec for the influx of geese but how different the two locations appear. For Serge, the geese are snow geese and make the whole environment seem white, whilst for you, these geese are mainly blacks and browns and match the fields of Flanders very well.
Even without the geese, which are an excellent bonus, this is a very pretty scene. The green field, backed by warm, cosy houses and majestic, winter trees, is, as always, very well composed, with clarity and natural colours.
I can imagine the noise as well as this very attractive scene.

Hallo John,
Een mooi gezicht op de groene velden die door vele ganzen bevolkt werden hier. Zij maken een mooi patroon hier, zowel op de grond als in de lucht. De bomen en boerderijen zijn een goede achtergrond en het zonlicht was heel aangenaam.

Dag John,
Ook hier zijn de velden en vaak ook de lucht vol met ganzen van verschillende pluimage. Naast de traditionele varianten zie je tegenwoordig opvallend veel nijlganzen.
De meeste soorten zijn in Nederland beschermd maar soms is de overlast te groot en wordt er vergunning verleent om het aantal te verminderen.
