Belgium has always had a very relaxed attitude when it comes to beer. The drink is considered to be part of our culture and we take great pride in its quality and variety.

Antwerp has countless caf駸 and bars. Some trendy and hip, others timeless. The latter are called "bruine kroeg". In English that'd be something like 'brown pub', which doesn't really sound right, does it? Anyway, the 'brown' refers to the old dark and wooden interior typical for this kind of caf�. De Pelikaan, which you see here, is a fine example of a 'bruine kroeg'.

This picture shows the outdoor seating at the back of Caf� De Pelikaan, a favourite place to go for a drink in the old city center...and it doesn't matter one bit whether you're a cyclist or move around in a wheelchair.

Note the old beer signs on the wall (there are plenty more inside), which includes my favourite: Orval, a strong trappist original from Wallonia which has a distinctive taste. It is one of those rare beers that have kept its bitter taste and has become quite popular over the last years.

Hello Benny,
This is a very enjoyable photo with lots of local colour and fine details. It could fit the category of "nothing special", but indeed it is very special as an expression of Belgian life among Belgian beers. I know Orval quite well. It is a very special and my brother has been a dedicated Orval fan for many years. I like it too but don't drink it very often.

Yes, beer in Belgium is like wine in Italy. I remember all the different brands, I think I had about 200 sortiments in 3 years :). Nice capture, indeed a relaxing mood.

Hello Benny

As soon as I spied the word "bier" in the thumbnail, I knew this was one I had to look at! A fine shot of an informal, relaxed scene, which expresses exactly the ambience of such places. We are pretty proud of the huge increase in beer styles and options in Britain too, with the rise of the small independent brewers over the last 20 years or so, but I have to admit that Belgium is the place to be for sheer variety. And I share your love of Orval, and other Trappist beers. A dedicated beerist dies and goes to heaven. He (or she!) wakes up here!
