BRUGES
First Sunday after lock-down, Bruges completely empty, no people on street
Our Lady church, the most beautiful from Bruges
Construction history
The first church in this place, a Carolingian chapel, dates from circa 875. In the archives of the church, the foundation is dated to the year 741 and attributed to Boniface, but this claim is questionable, since the oldest patronymic dates back to his companion Hilarius. . The chapel depended on the Sint-Maartenskerk in Sijsele, which in turn owned the Dom van Utrecht. In 1116 the chapel separated from Sijsele and became the main church of an independent parish. Presumably, therefore, the building was rebuilt and expanded under Charles the Good.
The construction of the current church started from about 1230. The oldest part, the central aisle, was built in Tournai stone, in the typical Scheldt Gothic. The influence of the Scheldt Gothic, with the two typical stair towers and the use of blue stone, can also be recognized on the front and west facades. The choir and apse, built between 1270 and 1280, radiate the classic French Gothic style, but completely in brick. The northern beech was built in 1370 and the southern beech in 1450. Around 1465, the Paradise Portal was built in Brabant Gothic.
The tower of the Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk is the tallest building in the city of Bruges. The first tower collapsed in 1163 and was rebuilt between about 1270 and 1340; the spire was only added in the 15th century and rebuilt in the 19th century. The use of brick is typical of the coastal Gothic. The church has five naves. In the center of the central aisle, the three-part hall divides the church into two parts: the high choir and the nave. The apostle statues are from the 17th century.
I hope you like it

Hello John,
It's a nice photo of the beautiful church which has been rebuilt and changed so many times through its long history. The view is partly hidden behind the trees, but on the other hand they make the surroundings look nice. You had perfect light and achieved beautiful colours.
Best regards,
Gert

Hello John,
This is ridiculous, I have had my critique removed and had to prove I am not a robot!
I will try again!
This must have been very strange for you, photographing your favourite city without sight of other visitors!
The church has had a long and chequered history. It must have been traumatic for the citizens when the tower collapsed. Thank goodness this one has stood the test of time!
Your photograph was taken when we were experiencing a some beautiful, warm weather. The church and surrounding area are bright and colourful, without a cloud in the sky! It's a glorious shot.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hi John,
The trees are framing well the church. The point of view is showing the details of Our Lady church. The quality of the light beautifies the colours. Have a nice day.

Hallo John, Te server is very slow today, it results a low participation, the pages take time to be open. That church is several centuries years old and the photo note provides information about its history. Its main tower is standing majestically against a backdrop of a cloudless blue sky. The monument has a tree-filled garden. Fine colors, good sharpness, regards.

Hallo John,

Vele groeten, Paul

Hi John
A mesmerising shot of this church in excellent pov which is perfect to keep the eye into perspective with immense details.
Exposure is subtle and the rich colors have boosted the visual quality nicely set off by the blue sky. A lovely shot

Hi John,
what a beautiful view of this characteristic church in Bruges.
Amazing blue sky, pleasant asymmetric composition. Luckily for this point of view the tree is relatively naked to allow the tower to be seen through the tree branches.
Abundance of vegetation makes it feel as if it was a rural scene.
Excellent capture,
M

Hello John,
Punchy light contrasts with splendid saturation and colour. Well framed and composed. I like the triangle formed by all the towers and steeples. Tfs!

Hello John,
Thank you for giving us such a detailed history of this magnificent and very old church which has seen some considerable changes over its long lifetime.
Because of Covid-19 the whole area looks incredibly quiet but you also chose a beautiful day on which to take this very fine photograph: the sunlight is beautiful, your colours are rich and the elegant church stands out beautifully against a deep blue sky. Superb details and sharpness as always.
Beautiful!
You take care.
Kind Regards,
John.
