Thracian Hero Statue, a photo from Varna, East

Photographer's Note

Thracian Hero Statue. There were over 4,000 bas relief sculptures found like the one at right, but before this statue was discovered, only 1 previous discovery of a Thracian Hero statue was made, and that one is in the Sofia Museum. This one resides in the Varna Museum. If you're prepared to pay a 20 lev tax, photography with no flash is permitted, despite the no photos signs. There is a postcards section in the entrance. But they had no postcards of this, so I asked if could I go back and get one please? It was donated to the museum from a local from near Plovdiv, south of Sofia & dates from the 1st or 2nd century AD / CE.

It's a wonderful statue even though the proportions don't seem quite right. The photo is well taken with the smaller relief nicely included to the side.

Yes this is happening so often with no photography allowed. Too often the guards do it "just in case".
Nice repeated motif. The light is nice.
I intended to visit Varna but due to pandemic that trip was cancelled. Maybe next year :)

It must have been worth paying a little money to get this photograph, not even available as a post card!
It really is an excellent piece of sculpture, beautifully detailed and creamy coloured, in your photograph.
The smaller example makes a pleasing balance to the entire photograph.
