Whilst the word 哲yhavn� means New Harbour, this area is in fact one of the oldest parts of Copenhagen harbour. The canal was built in the 1670痴 by King Christian V so that goods offloaded from ships could more easily be delivered to the nearby Kongens Nytorv (King痴 Square). At one time Nyhavn developed a bad reputation because of all the sailors concentrated in the area, and the northern side of the canal is still referred to as the 渡aughty side�.

Today the canal is a popular destination for both tourists and locals. Appropriately the northern side, which also happens to be the sunny side, is lined with bars and restaurants and in good weather the quay side is packed with visitors. When busy, even the edge of the canal becomes economy class seating, a somewhat hazardous occupation when things get festive!

My picture was taken at around 9:30 in the evening, when dusk started to fall and the 渡aughty side� began to live up to its reputation.
