Unwrapped

There was enough time last Saturday to explore other parts of Paris as well, including the monument that was wrapped by the same artists in a similar way as has now been done with the Arc de Triomphe. In 1985, Christo and Jeanne-Claude wrapped the bridge Pont Neuf in central Paris in fabric. At first the mayor of Paris, Jacques Chirac, had refused permission for the project, but an aide put the document back into a pile of the mayor痴 papers, which Chirac subsequently signed inadvertently. Just as now, the project lasted only a few weeks, during which it attracted three million visitors.

Despite its name, which means New Bridge, Pont Neuf is the oldest bridge across the river Seine in Paris. It stands near the western tip of ホle de la Cit.
