Photographer's Note
Iエd like to dedicate this photo to another Cannon!
This particular cannon, a 任anon de Marine, stands outside the Church Notre-Dame des Anges at Collioure.
It was made at the Fonderie Royale at Nevers in 1812. It is a caliber 18 cannon and a 1786 model. The mobile frame (ch龝sis mobile) is a 1763 model .
Cannon is derived from the Old Italian word cannone, meaning "large tube", which came from Latin canna, in turn originating from the Greek κάννα (kanna), "reed", and then generalized to mean any hollow tube-like object; cognate with Akkadian term qanu and Hebrew qāneh, meaning "tube" or "reed". The word has been used to refer to a gun since 1326 in Italy, and 1418 in England. Cannon serves both as the singular and plural of the noun, although in American English the plural cannons is more common.

Hi Gunnar. People love the ports, etc the water, because this life is pulsating. The view of the ocean is beautiful. And who needs a little rest is, stores, restaurants, etc. The gun is a wonderful bonus.

Hello Gunnar,
The point of view is very well chosen making a pleasing juxtaposition between the cannon and the church tower in the background. The people add further interest, injecting a sense of vitality into the scene. The square format makes for a splendid well balanced composition. The image has good colour contrasts and excellent sharpness.

Good Morning Gunnar,
John will be proud to receive this dedication, though I'm not sure how he will take to being referred to as a hollow, tube like object! I call him the Hercule Poirot of TE. No doubt he will be able to find out who last fired the hollow, tube like object!
It is another wonderful shot, with fine clarity and a great sense of depth. The cannon dominates the f/g; then there is a natural lead around the shot to the second focal image of the tower.
How do you manage to always find a person wearing red just to give that extra flare?
Have a lovely day,
Bev :-)

Good morning Gunnar,
Well, I am honoured! Thank you so much!
And a "Cannon" from a Gunnar"!
I recognise this place very well from your recent posting (the one with the artist) and this, again, is a finely composed picture, the tower placed perfectly "on the third" and the magnificent "old cannon" dominating the foreground. And, of course, a "lady in red" sitting just behind it!
Excellent composition, lovely soft colours, perfect exposure and exquisite sharpness.
Always wanting to find out more, I discovered, interestingly, that calibres of these French guns were documented, like British guns, by the weight of shot which they fired. So this cannon would have fired an 18 pound iron shot. Interestingly, in those days before metrication, a French pound was slightly heavier than an English pound just as a French "inch" was slightly longer than an English one.
But, curiously, I found it difficult to find information about 18 calibre French cannon because it would appear that their range of calibres at this time included 4, 8, 12, 24 and 32. Unless, of course, there is something here which I don't understand - I did read some other reference to Gribeauval having standardised an 18 calibre gun but I now can't find it again!
In any case, an 18 lb shot would have a diameter of 5 inches and this gun certainly doesn't look as large as that. So I rather suspect that, in this case at least, the calibre doesn't refer to the shot weight in pounds.
Anyway, Gunnar, enough of my ramblings. Thank you once again for a lovely photograph - and for thinking of me too!
Thank you!
Kindest Regards,
John.
P.S. I do believe that my name is not derived from the word for a gun but originally from the ecclesiastical "canon".
P.P.S. I presume that the name "Gunnar" does not derive from "gunner"? But I think it might derive from an old Nordic word for "warrior" - is that right?

Greetings, Gunnar.
A shot with appropriate mastery of exposure, sharpness and proportion in the crop to be dedicated to our friend tyro. The cannon and the tower make a pleasing perpendicular angle, and the sky blends almost imperceptibly with the water on the horizon. The gentle light is very pleasing and well captured. The scene looks so pleasant in the early Autumn light that one almost wants to walk into it and stroll with the others.
Regards,
Andrew

Hej Gunnar,

Buona giornata

Hej Gunnar,
Without reading your note I would have discovered everyone and everything in this picture - before I discovered the canon.
Cool poser on the beach observed by passing tourists and well dressed locals. The little peninsula on the right gives a great sense of depth and the historic tower protects the habeour/bay.
Very nice and relaxing scenery. TFS

Hello Gunnar
What appears in the BG as a clock tower looks to be part of a fortress. A good informative note to boot this nice picture. I have not heard of Collioures before, but the beach seems to be the same shingle like as in Cannes & Nice. Nice picture from this picturesque viewpoint
