Hamburg City Hall

On my way back to The Netherlands, I made a stopover in Hamburg, the second-largest city in Germany (1.8 million inhabitants). The official name for the city is Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg (Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg), which reflects the city痴 history as a member of the Hanseatic League in the Middle Ages and as a Free Imperial City of the Holy Roman Empire. Located on the river Elbe, 110 km from its mouth into the North Sea, Hamburg is the third-largest port in Europe. The city is also one of the 16 federal states of Germany in its own right, located in the north of the country, between Niedersachsen and Schleswig-Holstein.

Seen here is the Hamburger Rathaus (Hamburg City Hall), as seen from St.-Nikolai-Kirche (St. Nicholas� Church). It is the seat of the local government and located in the old town at the Rathausmarkt square. It was built between 1886 and 1897 in neo-renaissance style, replacing the former city hall, which had been destroyed in the Great Fire of Hamburg in 1842. It has got a 112-metres tall tower. Behind the tower, you can see the two artificial Alster lakes, part of the river Alster, with the smaller Binnenalster (Inner Alster Lake) in front of the larger Auﾟenalster (Outer Alster Lake).

Hi Lars
is it possible to go up that tower in the City Hall? But I suppose this is the better view anyways, this way we can see City Hall haha...Obviously the tower is the main focal point, but its still attractive seeing the man made lakes, and the bright light makes it work well too. fine city shot, never seen this area before. cheers

Hamburg har aldrig intresserat mig n舂nv舐t, j舂ft med m蚣ga andra tyska st臈er, men uppenbarligen finns det fina miljr att beundra h舐 ocks�. ﾅtminstone 舐 detta en praktfull byggnad sedd fr蚣 en perfekt plats. De b蘚a sjrna och tr臈en mellan dem skapar en v舁digt bra bakgrund.

Lars, you found a superb pov to capture a global view of Hamburg. I can see the imposant city hall with its tall tower in the fg. It features a sample of a neo-renaissance style building. Water sports can be praticed on the two lakes visible in the bg. Perfect sharpness, appealing colors

Quite intriguing to see Hamburg from a high point, i only saw the city around the RR station, back in 1980.
Architecture style, the large / wide river and the flat-land horizon, all wonderfully shown here.

This is a beautiful view, with nice depth, and a great, high POV. I like the green and blue hues of the City Hall roof. When I open the photo in large format I can see an interesting sculpture in the foreground. I wonder what it is... The lakes are very pretty, too.

Hello Lars, the City Hall stands proud amongst what would appear to be mainly more modern buildings.

fantastic viewpoint! I have been on this tower but the weather was bad and I did not revisit later.
Here the weather was clearly on your side and the composition is brilliant with the tower making a pleasant vertical element set against the blue lake behind.
Great depth of the field, we can admire the architecture of the city hall and the context of the lakes.

Om 鳬n of andere reden doet dit zicht me een beetje aan Scandinavi� denken. Ik zou niet direct weten aan welke stad. Maar ik denk dat het komt door de groene daken en het vele water. Dat laatste heb je ook bij panorama's van Stockholm.
Ik was me niet bewust dat Hamburg de tweede grootste Duitse stad was. Ik zou op M�nchen gegokt hebben ...
Het loont zeker de moeite om de toren van de St.-Nikolai-Kirche te beklimmen. Wat een geweldig uitzicht op het stadhuis en de achterliggende natuur.
Zeer helder en scherp gepresenteerd.

Dag Lars,
Een eerste vluchtige blik op deze schitterende foto deed mij meteen denken aan Kopenhagen. De toren en al deze groen uitgeslagen koperen daken zijn ook het kenmerk van de Deense hoofdstad.
Maar ook Hamburg toont zich hier van zijn beste kant.
