Photographer's Note

Since 1995, the European Union knows where to find her geographical centre. The first one from 1995 until 2004 was at Viroinval, Belgium, in close proximity to the French border and valid for the EU of 15.

In 2004, 10 new members were taken up, moving the EU centre far into Germany where it has remained since and will probably stay with us forever. The first EU centre in Germany was at Kleinmaischeid, Neuwied district, Rhineland-Palatinate, in service for the EU of 25 from 2004 until 2006.

These grounds show the EU memorial beside the community centre at Kleinmaischeid, with a steel compass and a mosaic of cobblestones showing the silhouette of EU-25. The real centre point is 1600 m away in a dense forest, not worth a visit.
