Photographer's Note
Marduk was the patron God of Babylon, the capital city of Babylonia, a kingdom in ancient Mesopotamia in present day Iraq, between the 18th and 6th centuries BC. Seen here is Marduk's servant dragon, Mushussu (𒈲𒄭𒄊). It is a scaly animal with hind legs resembling the talons of an eagle, lion-like forelimbs, a long neck and tail, a horned head, a snake-like tongue, and a crest. The Ishtar Gate, now in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin, dates from the 6th century BC, and was built by King Nebuchadnezzar II. I have loaded a wide angled view of the gate as a workshop. These are the original bricks excavated from Iraq and reconstructed in Berlin in the 1930's.

Hi Chris, great idea this close up of one of the servant dragon, and it needs to take a watch to the WS to understand better. Wonderful capture of the door imported by Iran 90 years ago, reminds a lot the architechtures of Uzbekistan. Have a nice day and thanks,Luciano

Bonsoir Chris,
L'oeuvre d'art est impressionnant. La prise de vue permet de voir les dtails de Mushussu qui est sur la porte Ishtar. La lumire donne un bon rendu aux couleurs de l'image. Bonne soire.

Chris, impressive artwork made in bricks arranged together. The blue background goes well with the dragon's golden color. I wouldn t like to meet such creature! Fine colors, good sharpness, interesting photo note, regards.

Hi Chris
you could have just as easily flipped the two photos, putting this as the WS and it would be just as good. how did they get the animal to be 3D like that, standing out a bit from the flat bricks? very cool, looks great all around
cheers

Hello Chris,
This is a masterpiece of very ancient art, captured here with superb colours. It seems reasonable to think this should have been reconstructed in Iraq rather than Berlin, but then it may not have survived the bombings in recent years. The WS explains the setting.

Gert
