City Gates in Rostock

Time for another pair of photos of a similar subject in Rostock. These are two of the city gates of the Old Town (Altstadt) of Rostock. Rostock used to have twenty-two gates, four of which still remain.

The one on the left is called Steintor. The oldest gate at this site was built in 1279, but the current Renaissance style gate was constructed between 1574 and 1577 as part of the southern city fortifications. The city motto, 鉄it intra te concordia et publica felicitas (Within your walls may be harmony and happiness), is inscribed right over the arch. The other gate is Krpeliner Tor, located at the western end of the city. It was built in 1270 in Gothic style. It was extended in later centuries and survived the bombings in WW2.
