Photographer's Note

View of panoramic fresco The Triumph of Achilles, by Franz Matsch. Matsch was born in 1861 in Germany. He worked mostly in churches and in buildings, painting various frescos for various benefactors. The Triumph of Achilles is a panoramic fresco found in the upper hall of the Achilleion, a palace in Corfu .
This painting was done in the late 19th century and depicts the great Achilles dragging Hector痴 body passed the gates of Troy as a symbol of his victory. Achilles rides on his chariot, dragging the dead body of Hector behind him, being followed by his Greek army. He holds the helmet of Hector in his right hand up to the sky. Depicted in this scene is Achilles chariot, most likely the same one that Ovid states Achilles uses to take down enemy chariots in line 78-79. Matsch makes good use of chiascurro (the Italian word for 都hading), especially on the body of the horses, as depth is shown through changes in lighting.
