Photographer's Note

Leros is one of the Aegean islands that receive immigrants and refugees from Asia every day. They are led to the police station, have their documents checked and leave for Pireaus on the first boat they can catch, either the same evening or the next. Leros is too small to host so many people for a long time. There's a well organized solidarity network on the island, that has been helping refugees and immigrants for years but it is not enough.

I spotted the lady from the other end of the beach in Ayia Marina, not far from the police station. She was looking into the sea intently, thinking, perhaps, of what she has left behind or wondering what future had in store for her. I wonder where and how she is now.
