Photographer's Note
Hi friends.
You see here a vase in a small extemporary exhibition space, a vase it is sectional and found by excavation at the prehistoric lakeside settlement of Dispilio.
Professor A. Keramopoulos visited the region on the year 1932 and he writes of that first visit.
撤rehistoric lakeside dwellings have bee identified at various points on this strip of land. A concentration of such dwellings was discovered on the eastern lakeside opposite the town of Kastoria, near the village Dispilio. Hare, slightly above water level, there is a small island shaped miniature plateau, on which the church of the Ascension now stands. In the passt it was possible to sail round it, but now that the water has been receded from around the island one can see1.ds piles studding the previously submerged area stretching from close to the former island out into the water.
In the summer of 1992 a systematic excavation was started by professor Keramopoulos.
Professor Hammond in his book History of Macedonia wrote.
The settlements of Kastoria and Malik ( Malik is in Albania) lie upon the route from Thessaly via the Aliakmon valley and the Tsangon pass to the Adriatic coast.
By 的deology we mean the ideas born on the consciousness of prehistoric man, together with his fears and his questions; his first attempts to organise his observations and to apply theories based on the these to provide answers to his everyday problems.
The ideology of the prehistoric inhabitants of Dispilio and of every prehistoric farmer and cattle-rearer arises from their relationship with the natural world. At first such a relationship is an empirical. ie.man is simply aware that there is an environment around him which is not static but necessitates specific responses from him. He is aware that this environment varies in an ordered way. In the course of time he conceptualises his relationship with his environment.
He rationalises what he observes and theorises to account for cause and effect.
Therefore the culture of Dispilio is as central to our understanding of those times as that of Neolithic Sesklo in Thessaly, northern Saliagos in the Cyclades, north Nicomedia in central Macedonia, or that of Paradimi in Thrace. So the archaeological evidence reflecting this centricity does not show a culture merely acquired by the adoption of the inventions of others. Dispilio is not therefore the passive percipient of cultural diffusion. It is rather a culture which is active and regenerative through interaction. It is not a culture which flourishes because it is located on the route connecting Thessaly to the Adriatic, as N. Hammond states in his book on Macedonia, it is rather a culture which by its own activities makes the development of such route possible.
The culture of Dispilio cannot be elicited from the static sum of recurring morphological elements, as G. Child would have us believe, but must be conceived of as a dynamic and redirecting culture. Having chosen this theoretical-methodological approach, we attempt to get close to the universality of the Helladic culture of which Dispilio is an element.
( All the information above I have from a book I found there in this space and it is written from professor Georgios Hourmouziades)
Here few comments from me about the photo, the vase give me the impression of a very very old and petrified face it comes from the depth of the past and looked at me while I was capturing.
I hope you like it and any comments are welcome.

Salut Evan
An interesting archaeological object and a well documented note. Do they allow the use of tripods? If yes, it would have been interesting to shoot without flash...
Cheers

Kalimera Vangelis,
Lieben Gruss, Ulf

Dear Evangele,
Your very detailed note on the capture certainly illuminates the past of the Greek peninsula and it is true that it goes back to the paleolithic times, the skull found in Halkidiki, as well as the neolithic settlements, including that of Dimini in Volos and the myth of Jason and the Argonauts. It all shows the continuity of human activity and presence for several thousand yrs. It's worth seeing the tombs found there.
