Photographer's Note
Castel S'Angelo,
This time around the back (away from the river) we see the bastion S. Pietro.
But the wall of the Borgo, linking Castel S.Angelo and the Vatican Palaces. From the time of Nicholas lll (1277-80) it was converted into an overhead passageway for the Popes.

Hi Peter,
Castel Sant'Angelo was the refuge of the Popes, who fled there danger through an elevated passageway still call "passetto del borgo". After the unification of Italy Castel Sant'Angelo is no longer part of the Vatican City, but belongs to the city of Rome.
A good and unusual perspective in your shot.
Ciao
