Photographer's Note
Hello Everyone,
Yesterday, my journey through my archives caused me to settle on a view of Florence, from the Boboli Gardens. The Duomo was far into the distance, but today, the view of the Duomo is much closer.
After climbing 414 steps, the view was obtained from the top of Giotto's Campanile!
The campanile is a free standing Gothic tower, part of the complex of buildings that make up Florence Cathedral on the Piazza del Duomo.
Of course the building that I was eager to photograph was the cathedral itself, which is a most recognisable icon in Florence.
I just loved this view, appreciating how the dome looks down on the city, like a protective mother!
If you look closely, you will be able to see very small figures, behind a fence, at the top of the dome.
They would be able to look at the campanile, where I was standing!
Florence Cathedral, formally the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore, is the cathedral of Florence, Italy. It was begun in 1296 in the Gothic style to a design by Arnolfo di Cambio and was structurally completed by 1436. The dome was engineered by Filippo Brunelleschi.
Thank you for your interest, Bev :-)

We did not climb the Giotto's Campanile, Beverley, was too much and not enough time for seeing everything in Firenze.
Admittedly, a magnificent sight from this high tower, people up on the dome as well. So, which one to choose for a climb next time...?
Indeed, an intriguing town to explore.
Good afternoon,

Hi Bev, Fantastic view of the Duomo dome from the Giotto's campanile. I didn't climb it, I haven't been even in the cathedral inside. I was twice in Florence and always there was such a crowd that it was impossible to go anywhere inside. I would love to see such a view.
Best regards MAlgo

Hello Bev,
I wouldn't be surprised if I have a fairly similar photo somewhere in my most ancient archive. What I can say for sure is that whatever I may have is not half as good. Maybe I had learned something about compositions already by 1969, but my cheap camera of those days would never have managed such sharpness and clarity.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hello Beverley, I was so impressed by this building when we visited Florence, it dominates the city.
A brilliant design, it is so beautiful.
I am impressed that you climbed so many steps to the top of the Campanile.
The people atop the dome really do show the scale of this wonderful dome.
Excellent sharp quality.
Kind regards, Jean.

Hi Bev
A lovely image with great detail. When we were in Florence we only saw the Duomo from the ground. Well done for climbing all those steps.

Hi Bev
Superb viewpoint! We can admire one of the most amazing buildings of Florence close up and also the wonderful panorama of the city and the distant hills.
It would be really funny to come across an upload from the same day, posted by one of the people standing on the dome with a note "if you look closely, you will see some small figures on the campanile". :-D
Best wishes

Hello Bev!
I can't climb the 414 steps up, but down to Dante's 13th hell, yes :-)
Heaven is not waiting for me :-)
I don稚 know, did you know that the statue of David was originally intended by Michelangelo for the ledge of the cathedral, which is why its proportions are so interesting. Because the master intended the placement for a lower perspective.
I love Florence, although my visit 2 years ago was a big disappointment. Hordes of Chinese tourists devoured the ignorance of the gallery stairs, and all the paper bags, like the dog痴 feces, were left on the spot. I didn't like this thing so much. We missed the peaceful tour of the square, the re-visit of the Duomo and the Baptistery, and we fled to the Palazzo del Signoria. There, interestingly, despite the 12 euro entrance ticket, there was no one but us :-) We finally had 2 quiet hours.

Hello Bev,
It was 40c when I was in Florence so I was probably more interested in finding a kiosk selling Gelati than the entrance to Giotto's Campanile! So thanks for showing what I missed.

Hello Beverley,
The Duomo has become the dominant symbol of Firenze and rightly so.
Wonderfully presented with the inclusion of the people on the viewing platform of the cathedral and with the many red roofs of this beautiful Italian city at your feet.
I see it was a difficult choice. Get the full picture of the dome or include the long shadowed street to the right.
Maybe the Campanile was better built a little bit further from the dome :)
Best regards, Paul

Hi Bev,
I don't remember seeing this angle before. I would expect that climbing up there means the place wasn't crowded. But at least on the dome there's quite a few people. This is a real masterpiece of classic architecture.

bev
a nice view of the famous dome. while there I never climbed towers for some reasons: the time I would spend in the lines , the physical effort to climb and the price. I only visited pisa tower, but I had no project to climb on it, but when I arrived there there isn't any line and enjoyed the experience.
take care

Hello Beverley,
You nice combined close-up of the dome Florence Cathedral with the beautiful panorama of the city. I've seen that many people have climbed many steps to get there. You were also very high to take this picture.
Great pov as well as colors, light and sharpness.
Best regards,

Hi Bev
yes, I remember this as well - its such an exhilerating experience when you see it for the first time. same goes for all these Iconic photo's - I know everyone takes them, but when you see it for yourself with your own eyes, and when you have a great clear sky like your shot here, its just so much fun. I miss this greatly, as I havn't travelled in quite some time now. lovely shot, glad you posted it. cheers
