Church of Santa Maria Assunta - Blera (VT)

History
The church of Santa Maria Assunta, located in the historic center of Blera, overlooks the square of the same name. It borders on the left side with buildings and on the right side with via degli Eroi, while it is bordered on the back by a natural cliff.
Some tombs dating back to the 7th - 8th centuries attest to the "in situ" existence of a primordial place of Christian worship.
It was the cathedral of the Diocese of Blera, unified in 1093 to that of Tuscania; in 1192, the bishop of Viterbo also assumed the title of Blera and Tuscania.
The fa軋de was rebuilt during the second half of the 18th century, as was much of the building. In fact, only some parts of the original Romanesque church remain, such as the crypt, dating back to the 11th-12th century, which houses the tomb of the saint. The marble portal dates back to 1507.
