1Madonna of Mercy crowned by two angels - Trevi Museum (PG)
Pietro di Mazzaforte, Processional Table
The artifact is cuspidated and painted on both sides; evidently it was a processional table. On one of the two sides appears the monogram of Christ in elegant Gothic letters, gilded and punched inscribed in a circle also gilded in relief from which twelve twisted rays and other straight and fine lines depart; from the central letter (H) starts the long arm of the cross where Christ Crucified with a white loincloth is depicted. On the other side, two angels crown the Virgin of Mercy with an imperial crown; Mary wears a large red damask dress that takes up the fabric of the open cloak lined with vaio to protect the group of faithful, five women on one side and five men on the other, kneeling in prayer, on a flowery meadow, around the Virgin . The Madonna wears a belt very similar to the Franciscan cord which, although made of gold and together with the Bernardinian trigram, denounces the origin from a Franciscan environment. This hypothesis is now confirmed by the recent discovery of the historical documentation which also recalls this work among those requested, in 1867, by the Municipality of Trevi to Tommaso Galletti, prior of the Sodalizio di San Giuseppe di Trevi. It also appears that at the time of the transfer the artifact was kept in the church of San Francesco, the chapel to the right of the main altar.
