Photographer's Note

Meeting of Joachim and Anna at the Golden Gate
Tempera on wood; 261x170 cm, comes from the chapel of the Immaculate Conception of the Cathedral of Nocera Umbra. Dated between 1492 and 1503.
It was probably commissioned to Matteo di Pietro da Gualdo by Giovan Battista Olivieri, vicar general of the bishop of Nocera from 1492 to 1498, for the chapel of the Immaculate Conception in the Cathedral. The rare iconography refers to a doctrinal theme supported in the Franciscan context and approved by Pope Sixtus IV in 1477, namely the conception of the Virgin sine macula (without sin). In particular, the Franciscans claimed that Mary was conceived solely through the kiss of Anna and Joachim.
To represent such an abstract theme in images, the Immaculate Conception is therefore inserted in a narrative context, the one in which her parents meet and kiss. In the center Joachim and Anna's meeting at the Golden Gate; above, the Eternal, below, the Immaculate Conception among angels; in the pilasters, from top to bottom, from left to right, the Saints Paul the Apostle, Mary Magdalene, Biagio martyr and Agnes; Rinaldo, Lucia, Bartolomeo apostolo and Blessed Angelo da Nocera.
