Small ship

The fresco is located inside the ancient church of Santa Maria in Campis in Foligno, in the first chapel of the left aisle, entitled to Pietro di Cola delle Casse, named after the client who financed it in the mid-1400s. the bottom is frescoed with Christ busy calming the stormy waters of the Sea of Galilee. The fresco, a jewel in the panorama of medieval Italian painting, is attributed to the Mezzastris school.
The theme of the "little ship" was an allegory of the Church capable of maintaining its stability even in the face of difficulties.

This is in a much better shape than the walls of your last photo. This is actually a very beautiful fresco, including the fine ornaments surrounding the main painting. There are fantastic details and the light was sufficient.

I think it is the first time I see a painting of this famous scene. It is so very symbolic that I am actually quite surprised that it is not more popular among painters.

Hi Silvio,

A good sharp photo of this quaint medieval painting. The details show up well, despite the difficult lighting conditions. i would like to see more saturation of the colours, but maybe the paint has faded since it was painted.
