Circular courtyard - Palazzo Farnese - Caprarola (VT)

The door opposite the entrance leads to the internal courtyard of the Palazzo Farnese, which has the shape of a circle inscribed in the pentagonal plan of the building. This solution was adopted by Vignola, after having discarded a polygonal configuration, to vary the architectural form between exterior and interior. Its construction, which began around 1560, was definitively completed in 1579.
The flooring is in terracotta, with flints and stabbing bricks arranged in a herringbone pattern, made in 1579; There are 10 perimeter drains sloping towards the interior where there is a "mouth of truth" that collects all the rainwater, once used for every daily need, conveying it into the so-called "glass" placed in the center of the basement.
The entire perimeter of the courtyard is bordered by a double-order arcade, also circular, with barrel vaulting, consisting of 10 superimposed arches and made of gray peperino.

That certainly is a photo opportunity not to be missed! Perfectly round courtyard presents just fantastic classic architecture. Italy probably is probably richer on that than any other country.
Blue sky of course looks great too.

Hi Silvio,

An interesting view straight up to the blue sky from this circular building. Good colour and sharpness. I think the photo could be improved by having a wider field of view, but perhaps your camera doesn't have a wide angle lens.
