Photographer's Note
銑ake Ohrid
Dedicated to everyone who regrets that North Macedonia is not located by the sea :)
However, there are three major natural lakes in Macedonia:
Ohrid, Prespa, and Dojran Lake.
All together the country has fifty three natural and artificial lakes. The three major lakes are shared with the neighbouring countries.
The respective surface areas are: Ohrid: 358 kmイ, Prespa: 273 kmイ and Dojran: 43,1 kmイ.
Lake Dojran, the smallest of the three is located in the southeast of the country and is shared between North Macedonia and Greece.
Lake Prespa (also called the Great Prespa Lake) is located in the southwest at the border triangle between North Macedonia, Greece and Albania. It is divided between the three countries.
Lake Ohrid is also located in the southwest of the country on the border with Albania, with most of it belonging to North Macedonia.
Like most foreign tourists, I only visited the most famous of the three: Lake Ohrid.
For this lake, tourism is a very important source of income. Already in the former Yugoslavia, Ohrid was on the tourist map.
So, what can those sea lovers who don't have North Macedonia on their wish list, do in Ohrid?
There are of course beaches, although close to Ohrid town it are mostly pebble beaches. For the sandy beaches one has to go to the south of the lake, near Ljubanista and Sveti Naum.
Many boat trips on the lake can be made. All kinds of water sports are available, even snorkeling and diving under and around the reconstructed prehistoric huts in the Bay of Bones.
The beauty of the lake is strongly defined by the green wooded slopes around it, which are popular for hikers.
Wandering through the narrow streets of the old town built on a steep hill while admiring the tall houses towering above you, will take you to many picturesque spots.
You don't have to wait for the Ohrid Festival to already discover the numerous sights, such as the fortress from the 10th century on top of the hill, the Roman amphitheatre, the icon gallery, the many Orthodox churches (Ohrid was referred to as the Jerusalem of the Balkans), the Turkish Mesokastro area, the mosques and Turkish baths, the traditional houses, an archeological site with the foundations of a 5th-century basilica, etc.
I don稚 pretend at all to be complete in this brief overview.
Outside Ohrid town the most visited place is the Sveti Naum Monastery which is very close to the border with Albania.
Information from different sites on Wikipedia.
My only advice for those wanting to stay in Ohrid town is to read the reviews of previous visitors about the accommodation before booking.
Not because of a lack of comfort, but most places close to the waterfront have been criticized for not being able to sleep much at night. In the old town near the waterfront it can be very busy and noisy until the early hours.
I have stayed in two different places, high on the hill. Every night it was a steep climb to my accommodation, but at least it was quiet there.
Honestly, I remember finding Ohrid too crowded compared to all the other places I visited in North Macedonia.
When I saw my photos from 2018 again after more than three years, all I saw was how beautiful and picturesque the place was
So I値l have to select strict in my photos if I don't want to show another full month only NM-pictures and I'm not that strong in strict selecting
If I remember correctly, I took my main photo on the wall of the Tsar Samoil's Fortress.

Hallo Paul,
De foto is vanaf een mooi overzichtspunt genomen en biedt een prachtig uitzicht op het blauwe meer en de rode daken van de huizen afgewisseld met groen. Het licht was aangenaam en ook de bootjes vormen mooie details.

Hi Paul,Macedonia therefore has many alternatives even if there is no sea, it is a bit like Lombardy, there is no sea but there are many beautiful lakes. Three photos showing the most famous lake with different perspectives and well done as always! Have a nice weekend and thanks,Luciano

Hi Paul,
I feel like it was a dedication for me. To be honest though I am not a very big fan of lakes. They are usually so flat and hard to photograph, maybe with the exception of the mountain lakes.
Very interesting and useful for me note, ha ha.
Great point of view in the main scene. The red roofs are so photogenic.
Nice curve of the lake.
Very well done,
M

Hello Paul,
I stayed in a fairly nice hotel, recommended by LP, not far from the lake but a rather long way from the center, and I can't remember much noise at night. This is a very nice view, and so are those in the WS, where especially #2 is very well composed with shrubs and branches framing the view. Ohrid looks really good from this high point and again fine weather offered you good colours.
Best regards,
Gert

A beautiful view of the lake with a combination of compact architecture with colorful roofs. Life on this lake is enjoyable.

Hi Paul
You said this is the smallest of the large lakes but it seems to have plenty of boat traffic so must be a decent size. A good wide view of the city on the lake from a good high view point.
cheers

Good morning Paul,
Beautiful high spot scenery over the red-roof-tiles town houses alongside the lake.
Blue and green mingling with the urban sight across the picture space.
Wish you a nice weekend,

Hello Paul,
Your photographs show the varied options that can be found on and around the lake.
The town does look attractive with the many white houses, topped by red roofs. You have used a nice balance of land, water and buildings.
I really like your scenic photograph incorporating the lake and trees. Lovely composition.
My warm regards,
Bev 😊

Hello Paul, I was in Ohrid just two months after you. I stayed in a hotel a one-hour walk off the centre, so I can't tell anything about the noise at the night. Wonderful panoramic view from the Samoil Fortress. I am not a beachgoer, so I do not care that North Macedonia has not the sea. I liked Ohrid very much, there is a lot of to see there and the atmosphere is very pleasant. I was also in Sveti Neum but not in Albania close to the lake. Spectacular composition.
Best regards Malgo

Hi Paul,
I also spent a few days in this lovely lakeside town.
The photo you are showing must have been taken from the castle on the hill.
Great picture that shows town with promenade along the lake in good quality.
Best regards,

Hi Paul.
A splendid note about the lake and the magnificent city that borders its waters, it is an enchanting sight with the red of the roofs contrasting with the blue of the lake and the green of the hills.
Wonderful the other two photos of the WS.
Both the color and the luminosity of the photo are magnificent, highlighting the beauty and sharpness of the composition.
Very well done. I like it
Have a good day.
Very best regards.
Luis.

Hello Paul,
I still have to catch up on some of your photos from North Macedonia. This one has a nice, high POV, and shows a wide view of the area. I like the curve of the shore, and all the dark orange roofs. There's nice greenery, too. I hope you're doing well. Take care!
