Following on from my last photograph this is another view of Undredal, this time taken from the lower part of the little village from close to the fjord, Aurlandsfjorden. The two small fields which you see in this picture and my last are the only areas of cultivated land here and that is the reason why the vast majority of the farming here involves the rearing of goats which can graze on the steep mountain slopes.
It is interesting to note that, because of its extensive mountains and fjords, the amount of Norway's land which is capable of being cultivated is a mere 2.2% of its total land area - which is remarkably small when we consider that the figure for the United Kingdom is 25.3%, Spain 34% and France 35.2%.
In this picture you can also see Undredal's famous little church which is the smallest Stave Church in Scandinavia. I shall show some more pictures of that later.
ISO 200, 1/320 sec at f/8, focal length 70mm.

Hello John,
Thank you for this closer view of this charming little village huddled below the mountains. The light is very attractive and the colours also. Very well composed with the little church placed in the foreground making a lovely focal point.

Hello John,
I wonder if this village is sometimes hit by avalanches in the winter. It looks vulnerable, so close to the steep mountain slopes. As long as there is not too much snow it is a very charming place, with the attractive church centrally placed. The colours and light are superb and so is the sharpness. I was somewhat bewildered by the diagonal stripes on the walls of the buildings, but it seems to be an optical effect. They look normal on the beta version, but when I enlarge that further the walls look like they're "dancing" or perform a light show. Maybe all this is only seen on my monitor.
Kind regards,
Gert

C'est tr鑚 impressionnant comme endroit. M麥e Dieu doit se sentir bien petit devant cette montagne. M麥e en allongeant le clocher, on est loin de faire le compte. Quelles jolies couleurs.

Bonjour John,
As fond of Norway as you are... So every time I open such beautiful photos I am back there.
Sharpnes is one of your characteristic in photography, I could see that and I decided to find a good program and read more about sharpening. And of course I can see that this image is rather sharp too which makes it attractive to see the many details of daily life on the country. Just a word came to my mind but I can稚 find the equivalent in English, 澱ucolique...
Amicalement,
Viviane

Hello John,
I like the low viewpoint with the green field in the foreground, it makes the magnificent mountains look even more impressive, especially in this bright sunlight. The charming village with its white wooden houses and the small church is well placed in the centre. It looks so picturesque. Nice play of light and shadow too. Great work!

Hello John,
a super sharp shot of this steep valley, the shadows emphasise its痴teepness.
You have composed the shot with great care.
Beautiful natural colours.
Very interesting notes, The amount of land available for cultivation was a great surprise.
Best wishes Jean.

Hi John
here we are back again! So many points I want to hit on.
First, I too had the exact same thought as Gert when I initially viewed this photo - do they have rock avalanches here close to the homes. I suspect the homes aren't actually THAT close to the mountains as we think, it just looks that way from the angle you took the photo from. Secondly, yes i noticed the over sharpening effect, but thats easily corrected & not a big deal. Thirdly, amazing to read that only 2% of the countries land is for cultivating...how can that be? I guess that's why Fishing is such a major industry. Fourthly, i can understand the local woman's frustration about not being able to build a new home due to the restrictions...thats too bad. This is the best TE post there is - a great photo, interesting details from a local, educational pieces in your note, and comments/dialogue with fellow TE members...awesome post John, well done. cheers

Hello John,
Not only were you blessed by attractive scenery but you were also blessed by bright weather that supplied superb light. The clarity of the photograph is excellent.
The little church, with its distinctive red steeple, is a good focal point and strongly positioned in the frame. I like how its red detail links nicely via the car and the wall, as a colourful little section. In fact, the whole scene is very well composed, with horizontal layers creating an excellent sense of depth as we move in deeper.
The steep mountainside emphasises the character of the country, rugged and imposing, where only the very narrow strips of land, up to the fjords, are altered for the benefit of man.
Have a lovely day,
Bev :-)

Hi John,
very impressive spot. I like very much how the mountains appear to be endless here by cutting away the sky.
Quite charming and photogenic are those wooden house villages among fjords. Pleasant play of the light and shadow and stunning colors.
Beautiful reportage!

Hi John,
Undredal is really a very remote village, I guess it is easier to come here by boat, the road in the valley up to the left here was very steep. A picture that brings back many memories.
Kind regards
Gunnar
