Photographer's Note
The Greatest Dame Of Them All
Quite possibly - there is nothing in her universe that could bring her down.
Already in her late eighties, she remembered: The Industrial Revolution, World War I, Nazi movement, World War II, and finally - her country being ruled by the brainless commies.
The world around her, was constantly evolving into the new (bad or good) forms of existence, but... NOT HER world!
If, she had managed somehow, to survive the Cossacks, the Wehrmacht and the Red Army, she'll survive ( as well ) the new, red brick houses with those solid, tile roofs, springing up from the ground around her cottage like the wild mushrooms after rainy day.
She fought the law and won the battles with her kids, with her neighbors, with the fire department and Regional governments. No reading or writing skills needed. Never wore the eyeglasses. No cane (God willing.)
Yet...
She had lost her final battle.
To non other but, that modern Anti-Christ diabolical invention... The TV !
She let the electric hydro company bring the power to her hut, when they told her that watching Dr. Kildare and Bonanza was rather difficult without the electricity.
Now... If she is still alive (and I strongly believe SHE IS ! SHE must be !), and if anyone saw her and her thatched roof' castle, please let me know. I'll go back to my country, drop down on my knee, and gently kiss her hand. Hey, I still remember the taste of that herbal tea she treated me and my family with.
Podlasie, Poland.. The country I left behind.

Some excerpts from the original critiques. You've got to read them, folks
Touchy She's as much tilted as her old hut
I like a hose on the right and old on the left
Reminds me of the native Indian American story of the old woman
Great composition Analog cameras are better for that
Of all the countries I have seen depicted on TE, no country's beauty and diversity have surprised and delighted me more than that of Poland, and I am planning a trip there soon.
I once knew a woman like her Lovely woman, but beware anyone who pissed her off, there was no forgiveness, period, end of story.
Praktica, Orwochrome... a music to me!
What I really like the most: her shoes! Just for her shoes I would trust and like that woman! ;-)
SHE is still alive. Because of YOU.
What is this George? Colossal hands born of calloused skin and years of torment. Legs like two stands of hardened oak...
I like this environmental portrait. It shows the portrait of the subject with her environment.
99% of your note is nothing more than the empty words

George, this is a great shot but I do not understand the second half of the note, is this a repost or something? Anyway the contrastiness of the shot and the saturated colors put this squarely in the surreal realm.

Hi, George -
Good portrait shot, very expressive. And I like the cottage in the background; gives us a good sense of the area. Her face is not as sharp as the cottage, though.
Best,

Napisalam (z pamieci cytuje) : "Boze, jakie piekne" !!!
A teraz mam ochote napisac : "Boze, jaka ona piekna"....
Duch z przeszlosci...
Ona jeszcze dla wielu zyje...
Ona jest symbolem piekna duszy ludzi wsi...
Jest to jedno z najbardziej wzruszajacych Twoich zdjec, o ile nie najbardziej...
Trzym sie, Youri. Grazyna.

so, where is my old comment for this one? anyway, i was waiting for babusya to come back and give me that look... just like my great grandma Anna when she was 103 back in 1976... the house she lived in was not that much different from this one. after the war, the commies had torn out the floors in her house and used them as fire-wood; but that's peanuts in the grand scheme of life. she still had her 11 grownup children...
it's a great portrait, George. my sincere compliments to you and this Polish queen!

I BET she's still alive, George! And her television can't be dead either ;o).
What I like about this photo, is that it looks both so anecdotical AND universal. This could be in an open air museum, but the way you pictured her and her house (including the TV-cable) looks so real, so authentic. A museum can never show it that way.
Very good composition, making the woman and her house look crooked, but strong. As strong as your old and grainy photo, with its delicious retro colours...
TFS & welcome back on TrekEarth,
Erik

Takich babć już teraz mało...
Za mało
"naści mleczka wnusiu, ciepłe jeszcze, no pij..."
"a może serka jeszcze smierdzi oborą..."
Jezu, jak ja za czymś takim tesknie....
Za takim smrodkiem krw, za gonieniem ich na łąkę, za takimi chałupkami, z sienią, gdzie w balii byłe zimna woda, żeby się umyc przed pojściem spać....
Niestety ja tylko koniuszkiem nogi ząłapałam sie na taki klimat...
Całuję.

SHE ! What a babe...A house like in a fairy tale book. A woman alive, a woman we see thanks to you. To be cherished. A queen.
I am amazed, though not surprised, at how seeing your pics now as they are posted, makes them even more captivating!. Each one brings the reaction : ah, yes, how I liked/loved/adored it.:-) None leaves indifferent.

Skąd ja go znam :))) (ten ostatni uśmiech to z rozrzewnienia)
Z rozrzewnieniem pozdrawiam T.

No need to add more like that. The photo deserves better than I'm able to write.

Don't remember what I wrote earlier, still I think she comes out of a book for children, the colours and the incredibly cute old house... I would maybe have cloned out the electric wires to make it even more like out of a sort of fairy tale (but then, there is the story that I just re-read, so the wires are important after all).
In the same time, this is a lovely portrait of a real old woman from the last century in Poland.
Great photo and I'd have love to meet this old woman, she was probably fun and interesting to listen to !
Thank you to give us the opportunity to dream and travel in the not so distant past...

Is she still alive... Hmm... I'll tell you Mr Grabarczyk the answer. But only if I decide that you merit it... So, let痴 see...
This photo is pure joy. Every time I go to your profile page, I see it, there. Fascinating. But will I be able to write words that will do justice to HER? Hmm. She is amazing! The smile in her face is so welcoming. Her scarf, her hands, her shirt the same color as her house, but what I really like the most: her shoes! Just for her shoes I would trust and like that woman! ;-) Now, there is the house too with the thatched roof... I hope it is still possible to find that kind of beauty. And good, you did let the electrical wires to be obvious. They have to stay there in my opinion (very humble, you know). And the last thing that I like a lot is the yard surrounding the house. Not all organized, not all clean, no nice flowers arrangements, no little clean cut bushes, not the small alley going to a neat bench, and so all. Just raw stuff, just lawn with patches of dry grass, and some ordinary flowers considered as weed. Sorry for my ramblings, but sometimes, too much neatness and order make me want to run and cry.
The only thing I would have got rid of would have been the small part of the roof of another building at the left side of the photo.
Well Jurcio 1, you are worthy of the answer.
SHE is still alive.
Because of YOU.
Claire

"Jurcio 1"! I had forgotten about this name! :)
You did listen to me again! Wow! that little bit of roof on the left side is gone!
