Photographer's Note

Sighisoara is another of the towns founded in the 12th century by the Saxons who came from Germany during the high Middle Ages. Today thanks to excellent conservation, Sighisoara is one of the best preserved medieval cities in Europe, which led UNESCO to include the city in 1999 as its World Heritage Site.

The Saxons built the city on the remains of a Roman fort the Castrum Sex. In addition to its old town, full of house, tower, remains of medieval walls and churches, Sighisoara is famous for being the hometown of Vlad Dracula, (Vlad Tepes) ruler of Wallachia between 1456 and 1462, known for his terrible violence and for be the basis of the Dracula myth.

During the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries Sighisoara developed economically like other cities in the region. Its location in a border area between the European world of the Renaissance and the East benefited commercial exchanges and mobility. The city is an example of the bourgeois villages of central eastern Europe. Besides commercial exchanges, the situation on the border makes war and conflict the other key element of the region. Hence the profusion of defensive and military monuments.

Sighisoara was neither the richest nor the largest of the seven Saxon cities of present-day Romania, but it was the most popular and well-known. Its streets, still lively today, and its monuments bear witness to that past.

The other Saxon cities are Cluj (Klausenburg), Bistrita (Bistritz), Sebes (M�hlbach), Brasov (Kronstadt), Medias (Mediasch) and Sibiu (Hermannstadt).

Sighisoara es otra de las poblaciones fundadas en el siglo XII por los sajones venidos de Alemania durante la alta edad media. Hoy gracias a una conservaci excelente, Sighisoara es una de las ciudades medievales mejor preservadas de Europa, lo que hizo que la UNESCO incluyese la ciudad en 1999 a su Patrimonio de la Humanidad.

Los sajones erigieron la ciudad sobre los restos de un fuerte romano el Castrum Sex. Adem疽 de su casco antiguo, repleto de casa, torre, restos de murallas e iglesias medievales, Sighisoara es famosa por ser la ciudad natal de Vlad Dracula, (Vlad Tepes) gobernante de Valaquia entre 1456 y 1462, conocido por su violencia terrible y por ser la base del mito de Dr當ula.

Durante le siglo XIV y XV Sighisoara se desarroll� econicamente como otras ciudades de la regi. Su situaci en una zona fronteriza entre el mundo europeo del Renacimiento y Oriente beneficiaba los intercambios comerciales y la movilidad. La ciudad es un ejemplo de las villas burguesas del centro este de Europa. Adem疽 intercambios comerciales, la situaci en la frontera hace que la guerra y el conflicto sea el otro elemento clave de regi. Por ello la profusi de monumentos defensivos y militares.

Sighisoara no fue ni la m疽 rica ni la mayor de las siete ciudades sajonas de la actual Ruman僘, pero si la m疽 popular y conocida. Sus calles, a佖 hoy animadas y sus monumentos testimonian de ese pasado.

Las otras ciudades sajonas son Cluj (Klausenburg), Bistrita (Bistritz), Sebes (M�hlbach), Brasov (Kronstadt), Medias (Mediasch) y Sibiu (Hermannstadt).

Hello Luis,
I remember Sighisoara as one of the prettiest towns on the Balkans, a pure delight to the eyes. There was quite a lot or restoration work going on in 2010, mainly on private initiatives as far as I could tell, so I guess the town looks even neater and prettier now. You captured a great view in this photo and the colours are stunning. The many trees mean very much for the general impression.

Hello Luis,
Magnificent and very colourful postcard from Sighișoara with many charming houses at the bottom of the hill and a good view of the larger historic buildings half hidden among the greenery.
This photo shows in an excellent way how picturesque this town really is.
Composition, sharpness and clarity are impeccable.
I visited Sighișoara in 2005. At that time only a few buildings had been restored and the whole looked quite neglected. I think a lot has changed in the meantime.

Hola Luis,

What a pretty place to visit!
The houses, besides showing eclectic styles, have such an attractive range of colours, almost like something from a fairy story! Only the vehicles give it a modern touch.
The buildings peeping from the trees, up the slope, continue this theme of a fairy tale.
It's a fine composition and beautifully exposed.

Sighisoara is perhaps the most picturesque small city I saw in Europe, tied with Cesky Krumlov in Czech Republic. I am glad you got to see it. I certainly enjoyed my stay there. Tfs.

a very picturesque town and you photographed it from a great point of view. No wonder this one is the most popular.
I like your asymmetric composition here with a group of uniquely shaped towers in the right and charming colorful houses at the bottom of the frame.
The weather didn't spoil you but the outcome is still very colorful and eye catching,

Hola Luis, miro tus fotos rumanas con mucho inter駸 ya que tambi駭 visit� casi todos los mismos lugares. Brasov y Sibiu son hermosos, pero mi favorito (y no solo el m卲) era Sighișoara. Bonita vista de la ciudad desde la parte baja. Excelente composici, bonitos colores. Gracias por compartir esta belleza.
