Detelina (Trifolium sp.), siroko rasprostranjen rod zeljastih biljaka, pripada porodici leguminoza. Obuhvata oko 300 vrsta, od kojih u nasem podneblju raste vise od 40. Latinsko ime Trifolium rod je dobio ime po karakterističnim slozenim listovima, sastavljenim od tri liske (lat. tres - tri i folium - list).
Detelinom se cesto u narodu nazivaju i neke druge vrste iz porodice leguminoza, koje nisu iz ovog roda, ali zbog oblika lista podsecaju na nju. Takve su, na primer, detelina kamenjarka , velika detelina ili lucerka , konjska detelina ili kokotac . Ima i vrsta koje ne pripadaju cak ni porodici leguminoza, ali se, takodje zbog oblika lista, nazivaju detelinama, kakve su kisela detelina ili kiseljaca ili ukrasna detelina.
