Photographer's Note

The older phase of the Neolithic is known in the archeology of our region as the Starčevo and Kere嗅a civilizations. Material remains of the Starčevo culture were found at the site of Kalvarija, the so-called zero point and the center of development of the future settlement in prehistory and the ancient time, a small and almost imperceptible hill in the eastern part of today's city.
The elevation (today with a small Catholic chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows in Mitrovica erected in 1921 and a 19th century cemetery) is horseshoe-shaped and about 12 m high, and the only natural elevation is visible from the near and far surroundings of Sremska Mitrovica. Next to it, on the west side, flows the stream Chikas, which comes from Fru嗅a Gora and flows into the Sava. A very favorable position, the proximity of drinking water and the Sava, which the people of Starčevo used for fishing, and probably also as a road, were ideal conditions for the beginning of mass settlement.
