14 The monument to the Fallen or Heroes of May 2, 1808, with its flame always lit.
Great architectural, urban and sculptural landmark, originally dedicated to the memory of the Heroes of Dos de Mayo in 1808, raised in the same place, the then called Campo de la Lealtad, where many of the soldiers were shot by order of General Murat. who rebelled against the French invasion.
After the War of Independence, the Cortes proposed in 1814 the realization of a tribute to the victims, but the restoration of Fernando VII paralyzed the proposal, which would not be resumed until the beginning of the Liberal Triennium, at which time a project was called , which was won by the architect Isidro Gonz疝ez Vel痙quez, and the first stone was laid in 1821.
Paralyzed again with the return of absolutism, it was resumed in 1836, under the regency of Mara Cristina de Borbn, following the proposal of Gonz疝ez Vel痙quez and the sculptural models of Esteban de チgreda of 1823, which had to be carved then by Jos Tom疽 (the Courage), Francisco Elas (the Constancy), Sabino Medina (the Virtue) and Francisco P駻ez (the Patriotism). In 1840 it was completely finished, burying here the mortal remains of those executed, which were in the Church of San Isidro, to which those of the heroes Daoiz and Velarde were added in 1909.
With the arrival of democracy, it was decided that the monument would extend the tribute to all the Fallen by Spain at any time, replacing the gas installation mechanisms of the votive flame that burns continuously with a modernized system. On November 22, 1985, the restoration and comprehensive reorganization of the monument, projected by the municipal architect Joaqun Rold疣 Pascual, were inaugurated by King Juan Carlos I, coinciding with the ten years of his reign.

Hello Luis,
This is a well cropped and nicely presented close view of the sculptures dedicated to the fallen heroes. We see them from a good angle in a perfectly exposed photo. Both WS show us the entire monument seen in the context of its immediate surroundings, but the main photo allows us to enjoy the details of the most artistic part.
Best regards,
Gert

Hello Luis,
A good close-up photo of this obelisk and monument, focusing on the sculptures around the base. The look very clear in this pleasant sunlight. The two on either side have got the green leaves as a nice backdrop.

Hello Luis,
A nice trio of neoclassical Greco Roman statues which form part of this poignant war memorial. Excellent sharpness, colour and density levels. Tfs!

Hello Luis,
Monuments in madrid can be an endless task to discover and document. Yet, you live there and have the time to go again and find more and more...
A fine frontal POV to the statues, clear and distinct.
Buenas tardes,

Hola Luis,
This monument has been a long time being erected because of so many political problems but now stands proudly as a memorial.
This cropped version allows us to see the close details of the sculptures, with a very 3D effect created by the light and shadows.
It is interesting to see the entire monument but these details are very rewarding.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hi Luis
Quite a huge monument with interesting narrative taken from good shooting point. The detail is excellent with just sufficient colours and strong contrast. That's a fine piece given its age, artistry and really looks great.
Best regards

Hello Luis,
You've chosen to present us a closer look at the beautiful sculptures in your main photo.
The photo is certainly very successful.
Still, my interest goes to the pictures of the obelisk in the WS. I don't have a preference for either one. Both have a good composition and framing and show the obelisk in a majestic way.
Best regards, Paul

Hola Luis,
very complex history. It made me realize how little I know about the Spanish history.
Beautiful presentation in great light which made the statues to look so crispy sharp. Thanks for sharing your holiday plans. I still hope that our plans succeed because with the Covid cases the rules of entering another country get so complicated and unpredictable.
Excellent work,
M
