17 The monument to Juan Valera, arose at the initiative of the ﾁlvarez Quintero brothers, among others, the erection of a monument in Madrid to the writer and diplomat, who died in 1905, was proposed.

It will not be until 1928 when a sculptural group is inaugurated on the Paseo de Recoletos in front of the National Library. It was commissioned to the famous sculptor Lorenzo Coullaut-Valera, nephew of the honoree, with a budget of 28,000 pesetas; The author presented a sketch of the project in 1909 in a Black and White exhibition, although it was transformed into the construction and, later, in 1927, he made a plaster of Valera's bust - he had already made another portrait thirty years earlier. In the sculpture there is another figure, a woman, who has wanted to identify herself with "Pepita Jim駭ez", one of the author's best-known characters, and in the back a bas-relief of Daphnis and Chloe, which she transposed into a common aesthetic.

The set, of sober architecture of a veiled classicism of great modernity for the moment and conciseness in the figures, is one of the best works of its author.

The set consists of a large prismatic architectural element of white limestone as a podium that supports three marble sculptures: the bust of Varela in the upper part, the female sitting on a bench in the lower part and a bas-relief with a scene pastoral in the back. This parallelepipedic element consists of a base, plinth and cornice, with little decoration; on the central plinth are, on the front, the framed inscription with marble letters: 1824 JUAN VALERA 1905, and on the back a scene from Daphnis and Chloe, which the writer translated. These are both characters standing upright at the extreme right of the rectangular bas-relief with a herd of sheep and goats; Daphnis carries a lamb and Chloe addresses him, her classic clothes swaying in the wind.

On this main body stands the bust of Valera, with a severe look and dressed in the fashion of the beginning of the century. Two small limestone wings also appear perpendicular to the promenade, which include a plinth that serves as a bench for the female figure, counterpoint to the bust; She is a beautiful young woman who rests from reading her in a simple posture, with her left hand on her chest and her right, holding the book, on her lap; her dress, very careful, shows jewels, ruffles and lace and does not hide the woman's feet, which stand out crossed in the axis of the set; a closed purse leans close to the girl on a ledge. His head, with magnificent hair, is very degraded, painted and has lost his nose. On both sides, symmetrical, two Greek masks are arranged on the fronts of these smaller bodies, a probable representation of the theater, with holes in the mouths 朴ossible pipes.

17 El monumento a Juan Valera, surje por iniciativa de los hermanos ﾁlvarez Quintero, entre otros, se plante� la erecci�n de un monumento en Madrid al escritor y diplom疸ico, fallecido en 1905.

No ser� hasta 1928 cuando se inaugure un grupo escult�rico en el paseo de Recoletos frente a la Biblioteca Nacional. Fue encargado al famoso escultor Lorenzo Coullaut-Valera, sobrino del homenajeado, con un presupuesto de 28.000 ptas; el autor present� un boceto del proyecto en 1909 en una exposici�n de Blanco y Negro, aunque fue transformado en la construcci�n y, posteriormente, en 1927, realiz� una escayola del busto de Valera 幌a hab�a realizado otro retrato treinta a�os antes-. En la escultura aparece otra figura, una mujer, que se ha querido identificar con 撤epita Jim駭ez�, uno de sus personajes m疽 conocidos del autor, y en la parte trasera un bajorrelieve de Dafnis y Cloe, que traspuso a una est騁ica al uso.

El conjunto, de sobria arquitectura de un velado clasicismo de gran modernidad para el momento y concisi�n en las figuras, es una de las mejores obras de su autor.

Se compone el conjunto de un gran elemento arquitect�nico prism疸ico de piedra caliza blanca a modo de podio que sostiene tres esculturas de m疵mol: el busto de Varela en la parte superior, la femenina sentada en un banco en la parte inferior y un bajorrelieve con una escena pastoril en la parte posterior. Este elemento paralelepip馘ico consta de basa, plinto y cornisa, de escasa decoraci�n; en el plinto central se encuentran, en la parte delantera, la inscripci�n enmarcada y con letras de m疵mol: 1824 JUAN VALERA 1905, y en la posterior una escena de Dafnis y Cloe, que el escritor tradujo. Se trata de ambos personajes situados enhiestos en el extremo derecho del bajorrelieve rectangular con un reba�o de ovejas y cabras; Dafnis carga con un corderillo y Cloe se dirige a 駘, con sus ropajes cl疽icos mecidos por el viento.

Sobre este cuerpo principal se alza el busto de Valera, de mirada severa y vestido a la moda de comienzos de siglo. Dos peque�as alas tambi駭 de piedra caliza surgen perpendiculares hacia el paseo, que recogen un plinto que sirve de banco a la figura femenina, contrapunto del busto; se trata de una bella joven que descansa de su lectura en una sencilla postura, con la mano izquierda sobre el pecho y la derecha, que sujeta el libro, sobre el regazo; la vestimenta, muy cuidada, muestra joyas, volantes y encajes y no oculta los pies de la mujer, que sobresalen cruzados en el eje del conjunto; un monedero, cerrado, se apoya cercano a la joven en una repisa. La cabeza, con magn�fica cabellera, se encuentra muy degradada, pintada y ha perdido la nariz. A ambos lados, sim騁ricos, se disponen en los testeros de estos cuerpos menores dos m疽caras griegas, probable representaci�n del teatro, con orificios en las bocas
