Photographer's Note

With these photos I finish the series that I wanted to dedicate to Madrid, I am packing a suitcase, to travel tomorrow a week to the Canary Islands, when I return I will start a series dedicated to the beautiful city of Segovia.

The door of Felipe IV or Mariana de Neoburgo, gives access to the Parterre gardens, in the Retiro Park from Alfonso XII street, and is located in front of the Cas del Buen Retiro.

The gate was erected in 1680 as a triumphal arch for Mar僘 Luisa de Orle疣s, first wife of Carlos II, who arrived in Madrid on January 13. In 1690 it was used again as a triumphal entry, this time in honor of Mariana de Neoburgo, second wife of the monarch, which is why a year before the commemorative inscription on the lintel was changed, with a legend alluding to the new queen, which is the one that has survived to this day.

The door is in the Baroque style and was made by the architect Melchor de Bueras. It was originally located in the Carrera de San Jerimo, on the site of the current Plaza de C疣ovas del Castillo, since at that time and until the middle of the 19th century, the Real Sitio del Buen Retiro extended there.

It is carved in Tamaj stone, with sculptural ornaments by Pedro de Landa.

In 1857 it was moved to Los Jerimos and finally in 1922, the municipal architect, Luis Bellido, directed the adaptation and placement of the door in its current location.

La puerta de Felipe IV o de Mariana de Neoburgo, da acceso a los jardines del Parterre, en el Parque del Retiro desde la calle de Alfonso XII, y est� situada frente al Cas del Buen Retiro.

La puerta fue levantada en 1680 como arco de triunfo de Mar僘 Luisa de Orle疣s, primera esposa de Carlos II, que lleg� a Madrid el 13 de enero. En 1690 volvi� a ser utilizada como entrada triunfal, esta vez en honor de Mariana de Neoburgo, segunda esposa del monarca, motivo por el cual un a antes fue cambiada la inscripci conmemorativa del dintel, con una leyenda alusiva a la nueva reina, que es la que ha llegado a nuestros d僘s.

La puerta es de estilo barroco y fue realizada por el arquitecto Melchor de Bueras. Originariamente se encontraba en la Carrera de San Jerimo, en el sitio de la actual Plaza de C疣ovas del Castillo, ya que por entonces y hasta mitad del siglo XIX hasta all� se extend僘 el Real Sitio del Buen Retiro.

Est� labrada en piedra de Tamaj, con adornos esculticos de Pedro de Landa.

En 1857 se traslad� a la bajada de los Jerimos y finalmente en 1922, el arquitecto municipal, Luis Bellido, dirigi� la adaptaci y colocaci de la puerta en su ubicaci actual.

Hello Luis,
The elegantly decorated gate is well placed to the side and the large red bushes draw my attention. You were lucky to capture two persons just coming out of the garden. The photo is nicely balanced and the colours are very appealing. The WS is also very nice, especially the wrought iron fence in the foreground.

Maybe a symmetrical composition was tempting here, but this non-symmetrical photo is more interesting and dynamic I think. The details of the gate and fence look good. Nice green colours also with some hints of red. Well done. Have a nice holiday.

Hello Luis,

Well framed and composed placing the arch on the vertical 1/3 axis point. Good sharpness and the red bushes by the portal add symmetry and warm cold colour contrasts with the blue sky. Tfs!

Hola Luis,

This is a well-considered, off centre composition. I like the way the gap in the hedge lines up with the gateway and makes an easy entrance, with steps beyond for smooth journey.
The two red bushes are like sentinels, standing to attention.

I like your w/s, too.
It must have been a difficult decision, deciding which to post first.

Hola Luis,
Beautiful photos. The main picture has a pleasant asymmetric composition. You have complemented it also with additional view. There seems to be a lot to enjoy in this beautiful park. I think I already forgot how great it was.
Even from this angle we can see how rich is the vegetation behind the fence.
I hope you have a peaceful holidays on Canaries. Don't go too close to the erupting volcano although it would be great to have some photos of it.

Hello Luis, Thank you very much for your critique. I am not so low in spirit. The most important is that all in my family are in good health. Finally, I started to travel again, I visited many wonderful places, and I have already the plan for the trip in December. And the whole year I have been busy working so there was no time to be bored. Very elegant gate. I think I remember it. Nice view of the park behind it. The big trees are probably cedars.
