Photographer's Note

On one of my recent walks on Sdermalm island I stopped to take a look at the possibly largest ship ever to have entered central Stockholm.

This is the USS Kearsarge of the US navy. It had arrived in Stockholm, along with several more American warships, on its way to a large international military exercise in the Baltic Sea. USA's top military officer, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark A. Milley, also arrived to talk to the Swedish government (and to have dinner with the king).

These exercises in the Baltic Sea are held on a regular basis among a number of Nato members, with Swedish and Finnish troops also participating, but this year it was given a special significance because of our two countries' applications to join the Nato. And considering Russia's attack on Ukraine it's worth noting that Russia is not far away from here.

Whether Sweden will be admitted to the Nato remains to be seen. The Turkish President doesn't like that Turkish citizens who he regards as terrorists (most people who are against him are considered terrorists) have been given asylum in Sweden, or that Sweden (along with EU and USA) supports Syrian Kurds fighting the "Islamic State". Swedish political infighting ahead of September's elections has probably also been playing into the President's hand. At the end of the day we may be facing a Turkish veto.

I'm not a great fan of the Nato, but it shouldn't be up to one of the most authoritarian leaders in Europe to decide our future.

The ship is facing Gamla stan (Old Town) in the distance to the left. But of course I took this photo mainly for the lady in red.

An alternative composition, minus anything red, is in the WS.
