Barn with snow, a photo from Sankt Gallen, East

Photographer's Note

This is another one of my pictures that I have actually not much of an idea what to write, what I could explain to you, maybe I am a little blank after my famous Christmas letter that I send out each year to friends and family explaining what I have done over the past months, but I also wrote that they do not have to read my sermon :))) and go to the very end where I wish them a wonderful year.

Happy days to you too � some are remaining before we step over to another January like many before. Time to put the Champagne on ice and prepare some thoughts what to change or maybe what not to change.

Actually this one is for Kristine who wrote me that I am doing pretty good with white :)))) Thanks endlessly, these little things help me to move forward!

Hallo Barbara,
sch minimalistisch wird das Auge in die Ferne geleitet, und die H�tte gibt einen schen Farbtupfer als Kontrapunkt ab.
Gar nicht so leicht, bei Schnee richtig zu belichten.

Hi Barbara,
beautiful light you've captured here. The polarized sky is really beautiul. What I also like is the dotted reflection of the snowflakes in the foreground. This singular detail really conveys for me the idea of fresh snow and sun. I think though I would have gone for a little less sky- or more for that matter - so as not to center the horizon too much. Still, lovely picture.

Hi Barbara
Your exposure is bang on as we can see texture and detail in the FG snow without the snow appearing too gray in colour which is what happens if we believe the camera meter.The small twig sticking out of the snow bank together with the barn and tree form a nice triangle for our eyes to move between. This one is going to my favourites.

Excellent exposure. You even captured the little sparkles caught from the sun on the ice crystals. Your low POV on the snowdrift helps to make a powerful lead-in and there is good balance between the barn and the winter tree. Well done

So wie hier,bei strahlendem Sonnenschein ist Scnee wundersch.
Gibts in meiner Region so gut wie nie.Wenn ich im Februar zur�ck bin werde ich mal bei hoffentlich Sonnenschein am Wochenende in den Schwarzwald fahren um endlich auch mal ein Schneebild in meiner Gallery zu haben.
Ein tolles Foto,perfekt composed mit den wenig Elementen.

It's nicely graphic, Barbara, yet its subject is soft snow! Of course it's really the contrast of the hard lines of the tree, the barn and the horizon against that snow that make it interesting. Those tracks leading to the barn are a nice touch, too. Pretty good DOF for f/7.1, I'd say. My only small suggestion is to not crowd the barn against the edge of the frame quite so much. A great wintry scene, though, in your distinct style. Happy New Year! Regards, Ken.

Hi Barbara,
I am really liking all your snow shots, since I also never get to see snow here where I live. This one is great with your angle of view leading us into the shot with that bank of snow ending with the bare tree and then our eye moves accross to the house in stark contrast with the super blue sky and the crisp snow. Nice in it's simplicity!

It amazing to imagine that in a few months time this field will be filled with beuatiful green grass and speckle of yellow and gold of the dandilion flowers, or maybe this is too high for the flower and grass? Oh it must be grass since there is a barne. That is the beauty of a place with the four seasons. I never live in a place like this, and I can only experience it through your eyes and others. This is as usual a wonderful image with the line that lead us to the tree and over to the barne. The texture of the snow is great with glistening sparkle of light and the blue tone of the shadow. Truely a COLD Swiss bliss :)

Fantastic depth created by the long vertical mound of crystal fresh snow that leads to the lone tree and vivid blue sky that contrast so brilliantly.

so... now you let us see your lovely smiling and eloquent self ;)) nice to meet you! (i'm referring to your profile shot here).

impeccable treatment of whites (and blues) again. you've managed to preserve the warmth of the light on the snow (yellowish cast), while strong whiteness here and there suggests flawless exposure.

i'd have gone for a 'litttle' more space for the barn on the left side. just a 'bit' more air ;))

that's it. i'll stop mumbling.

The barns here in SE Queensland show all the snow melted away as the forecasted temperature for today, 1st of January 2009, is only 34 Celsius!
It is a great shot with an excellent composition and perfect sharpness. I love it a lot even if I am already feeling too cold.

Hi Barbara,
pretty good with white doesn't begin to cover your work!! First you're very clear on the concept that snow must have large expanses that are untracked, second you manage the light so your pictures don't come out looking like B&W photos (like many of mine) and third, you always get a bit of sparkle to your snow. I would say, you're consistently the best snow photographer I've seen.

Sch, so viel weiﾟen Schnee zu sehen, und dazu noch solch einen fantastischen blauen Himmel. Wir haben erst wieder Schnee seit gestern kurz vor Mitternacht, aber weder Weihnachten noch die Feiertage waren bei uns weiﾟ; leider. Aber dein Bild ist jedenfalls hervorragend. Dein point of view gef舁lt mir auch sehr gut und der Bildaufbau ist super.

I'm so happy to have been walking in such snow today. I love how it seems so smooth and sparkles like diamonds at the same time. The little tracks leading up to the barn and how the barn and tree balance each other out are so important to the composition. Lovely blue sky too.

Quel ciel ! Une compo simpliste mais qui fonctionne � merveille. La maison est peut-黎re un peu trop serr馥 sur la gauche mais la ligne form馥 par le mur enneig� est parfaite pour guider le regard.

see what happens if you don't check TE regularly? I cannot BELIEVE I missed this one! love it, from corner to corner - the blue, the white, the little sparkles on the snow, the footpath leading to the barn, LOVE IT. but I have to say that your photos have spoiled me and now I want every winter day to look like this :) Kristaps will tell you that because I wanted my own winter-perfect photo, we were out and looking for snow and blue sky already at 6:30 AM on 1 January :)
but back to the photo - you're really good not only with the white, but also with vertical format, that's another thing that eludes me. I could go on and on, but the bottom line is simple - great shot, goes straight to my favourites.

Hi Barbara:

I really like this. This is the kind of shot that makes a Texan like me (where it almost never snows) want to live in a snowier climate. :) I love that this has a feel of being from another century. It's hard to beat blue skies and fresh snow as well. One thing I would change is the placement of the barn--it seems a bit too close to the edge of the frame for me. But that's about it. Looking at this makes me want to live in Canada or someplace cold. :)

tolle Aufnahme dieser verschneiten Landschaft.
Du hast den weissen Schnee hier toll eingefangen und der Kontrast zu dem herrlich blauen Himmel im Hintergrund ist sehr sehenswert. Klasse Farben. Auch dein Aufnahmestandpunkt gef舁lt mir sehr gut, mit diesem schneebedeckten Erdwall, der zum Baum hinl舫ft und der Fuﾟspur, die uns zur H�tte f�hrt. Ausgezeichnete Bildgestaltung.

very good composition and colors..lead the eyes from foreground to middle of the frame..placement of elements is very good,one thing to say hori line is almost middle of the frame which is little disturbed me,where you can crop a little more on the upper side of the frame...best wishes...subir
