Photographer's Note
The Street Parade is a demonstration for love, peace, freedom and tolerance.
this capture is not about the devils and all the good looking girls
a lot of gay people find there peace at these parades
Everything is a ok everybody is your friend in these walls you can be who you want to be
This is a very good reflection what tolerance is
I hope you like the result (and if there are any comments, id馥 or even dislikes let me know, it痴 all about learning and sharing)

now i'll start probably quite a hurricane about a terrible lack of tollerance etc. but its not my intention to comment on the hetero or homo sexual relationships, i personally do not care if someone prefers men over women, i do prefer women and that is all i have to say about it,, in terms of tolerance (there is a plethora of pros i find in kissing women over kissing men, if you ask);
however what i do care about is the thin line drawn between what is funny, and what is disgusting; for me - this image substantially crossed the line, and i do not think that it is 100% appropriate to exhibit this (i do not remember seeing such a picture of reps of different sexes having SUCH a kiss here on te, and please don't try to convince me that this one is a kind of a pretty thing to show);
i do not object any parades - best examples of the pictures of the recent parade in switzerland one may see scrollin sebastien's (zepi) or dolin's gallery - they do tell me something about the event;
this image tells me basically nothing about the event, it does tell me however that after the marching the two of those funny guys are going to have a nice but quick meetinmg somewhere (or they won't wait until the end?);
plus there is not much to say about the photo itself, just a pressed button;
would you call this critique a kind-of-provocative? before you do try to do so please carefully look at the picture and try hard not to call IT provocative;
sorry - no smiley, next time

It is sad that bantonbuju misses the point of the photo and the artistic value it displays. This is really a great shot and has excellent CONTENT. Unlike so many coldly neutral photos that just look like postcards (my own included, I must confess!), this photo demonstrates a moment in time and space that is unique. BRAVO!

Yes, alot of views but few comments, it does draws attention, but it doesn't mean it's very good. For me two people kissing has to be presented in a special way to really wow me (just like two poeple holding hands, only 1 of a hundred pictures will be great, the rest will be a complete bore), and this one except for the shock element doesn't a much else going, a snapshot of two poeple kissing, not much else.

I don't like these kind of shots... nothing to do with love, just a demonstration of sexual behavior in public... OK if it's done in private but who needs to see them, such a close up I find disgusting. And I would feel the same for heterosexual couples who would do the same in public, nothing to do with the fact that it's two men.
Should it be posted or not here.. well it does show a way of living on earth...

Hey Ishai, I read all the comments on this photo before I decide what to write about it. I picked it out of your gallery because I thought it was bound to incite some debates, and I wasnt wrong!
My opinion at first was that it was a bit too much, I dont find it disgusting, but I do find it a bit unsettling, and not because it is two men. I think perhaps if this photo was of a man sticking his toungue in a womans mouth it would cause more uproar because of political correctness and degridation of women, and possibly ome of the people who like this phot obecause of the freedom of sexuality it shows would not like it as much because of the differing sexes.
Anyway the more I thoguht about it the more I realised that this photo is simply a recording of something that happened, scenes like this would exist whether you were there to capture them or not, you are just conveying to us a moment at a festival, so we are learning of the types of things that happen at these festivals, people dress up, get a bit crazy and have fun.
I think that having fun is the underlying theme in this photo, not sex or sexuality, I think the guys are just having a laugh, and you were there to captuer that moment, and thats that, so I commend you on your effort and congratulate you for seeing past many peoples idea of taboo and daring to post a photo which crosses a lot of peoples boundries. You obviously knew that this would incite controversy among TE members and were prepared to deal with negative coments so I also applaud you for that.
Now onto the technicalities the only thing I coudl spot is that it is possibly a bit blurry, sharoening may sort this out?
Hope I havent wrote too much :P I just wanted to convey my opinion accurately. This is the first photo in a while that has made me think so much about what my opinion actually was, its not just a photo which we look at decide the colours are nice, it has underlying themes and it forces the viewer to think before commenting. Well done on this!

hi ishai, i saw this picture when it first came on here, and have visited it a few times to think about what to write but i start to write and then cannot find the words to describe it. but after reading many other critiques on this shot, i have brought myself to critique it.
i know you posted it knowing that not everyone will like it, but i like it i think it conveys the carnival atmosphere, and although these man are probably homosexuals i think this was just a fun shot for the camera and as such makes me attracted to the shot.
you got a good result and although one or two people do not like the shot, maybe because such things should not be posted on here, but i whole heartedly disagree, i think this fits the rules of TE perfectly!
on a photographical POV it think it lacks sharpness. but composed well and a nice portrait shot, i think they are joined at the tongue! :P
but what a big tongue!! thanks for sharing

Great depiction of over the top PDA (public display of affection). Get over it. It's campy, it's flaming, it's outrageous in the mold of John Waters.

Hello Isha,
Very controversial picture. Personaly I donエt find it offensive and I do like the facial expressions of the individuals. About the DOF, is a little blurry, I guess not blurry enough as some people may wish for. lol.
Keep the good work my brave friend!

I see a tongue...a BIG tongue.
The guyエs heads are cut off, thereエse a "head" placed in the guys neck, the pic is blurred and the tongue is expressed in a way never to be seen in daily life, festivals or events...
Itエs a bad photography work as well as the irrelevance of the image to the title, photoinfo, categories and the theme is obvious, I canエt see any "Street Parade", neither love, freedom nor piece!? How is a close-up of a big tongue showing tolerance etc?

"I may disagree with what you have to say, but I will defend, to the death, your right to say it." - Voltaire
The guy's tongue is pretty gross though, lol. Some parts are kinda out-of-focus, but overall sharp and nice colors.
About posting pictures like this: I don't care about peoples' sexual orientations, but where the line between photography about the world and pictures of sexual acts really is unknown to me.
I think if you zoomed out and gave viewers a sense of what was going on around these two dudes would have shown people that it's not about the sexual behavior, but about an event that is taking place. Just a thought.
Thanks for sharing, nonetheless. :)

Dag Ishai!
1. I don't think it's a great picture. It documents the parade, but could be shot somewhere else.
2. I don't like what they do, I won't do the same. But I don't care and I don't mind. They are free.
3. I won't dare to shoot a picture like this, at least so close. I won't have courage. I would feel as cross the line into their intimacy.
For reasons 1 and 3 (because you dare to get the shoot), I think you deserve at least one point.
Greetings,
Francisco
PS- I read only about half of the critiques, comments and discussions (it's too many).

There is nothing wrong with these guys doing their thing but this image here on TE is disturbing and disgusting.
I won't comment on alternate sexuality or their lifestyle because I think they are okay. But for you to post this picture is too bad.
Bantonbuju is right. This pic does not say anything about the purpose of that march. It does not say anything about a particular place or culture. To me this is purely sexual behaviour in public.
I would have expressed my views about the "tight framing", sharpness or the "best moment" but I'm not going to scroll up and look at that photo.
Sorry Ishai Gonda!!

Ill weigh in hre.
Sorry ishai, I dont see anything about this other than the shock value that I like. Its shocking, but that wears off quickly and then what are we left with? Its not a particularly well shot photo technically. Its not a very interesting moment. Its not well framed. There is nothing compelling about this. Its simply shocking, but art cant be just about shocking because after that wears off we still have to have a photo that presents something of value to us. With so many really good gay parade photos uploaded here over the last few years, this one simply cannot compete. Sorry ishai, I do like your work, but this one turns me off 100%.

Disguisting, uninteresting photo. It makes me sick. When there is no talent, there must be controversy. But gays are not controversial anymore, and You have talent - I like many of your other pictures very much, also from love parade. This picture is not controversial because of gay subject, but because of total lack of good taste. You will probably say: "All I wanted, is just to make a discussion". OK, but it's not the "social problems" site, but photo site - and your photo is awfull. The same discussion you will cause, when you upload a photo of people peeing on the wall.
PS.
there is nothing wrong with gays (and nothing wrong with showing photos of men or women gays), but showing those kind of pictures on TE is wrong (i mean pictures of people kissing in perverse way). If You want to be controversial, try to find thematic site. There you can put pictures of people doing any physiological things. Imagine, that this site is opened for anybody, also for juveniles.

I like the insane grin of the guy on the right. Picture is out of focus.

(819) 2006-09-19 13:13
Oh my, I must have my 2 cents. ;D
First technically: The composition is great, wonderful framing and close enough to be intimate. Very effective for the subject. I think the lack of focus expressed by some is actually movement. I could be wrong, but this is apparently a 1/15 exposure. In any case, is could be sharper. Just to clariy, that's where you lost a point with me.
As for the subject, it does gross me out. Perhaps I should note here that I am a gay woman, so this is not a political statement. If this were two men, women or one of each I'd still find the tongue shot gross. That said, I think that was the point. There's laughter and play here... the smile on the right reminds my of a little boy defiantly chewing with his mouth wide open just to gross out his peers.
Does this belong on TE? Of course it does! Contrary to those who say "this could be anywhere", there are places these men (boys?) would be jailed, beaten or killed for this. We've learned that Zurich is not one of them. Likewise, some have said ths is not symbolic of the parade. Go to a Pride parade and you will see many posing in a similar fashion. This is very much a part of the culture of the event and symolic of the freedom it stands for.
Thanks for opening the doors to debate ishai!

Sometimes I think all of us should have some part of our personality belonging to a minority group: Homosexual, black in a white country, white in a black country, muslim in a catholic part of the world and so on, so on, so on to realize what means to be different from the big part of your environment...
What I see in this photo is nothing discusting, itエs two guys making fun about the people who thinks there is something wrong with homosexuality, I mean they are pretending to sin in front of what some people still think this is kind of sin... Finally what I see is a funny side of world you have portraited very well Ishai. Thanks for this photo.

akniskern (29) 2007-01-20 18:02
I have to say that, to me, this picture does not represent love or peace. Freedom? Eh...me writing "F you!" on a bathroom wall can be considered "freedom". Tolerance? Eh...where do we draw the line? This is not love and peace, but lust and the promise of a quick hook-up (which are very rarely loving a peaceful).
Artistically, this picture does nothing for me. Plus, it does not reflect what the photographer obviously wanted to convey (love, peace, etc). And, to be quite honest, even if this was a picture of a man and a woman, I would still find it off-putting. There are other ways to depict love, peace, freedom, and tolerance.
Thanks for sharing, and better luck next time.

I have to agree totally with the words and comments of bantonbuju (read his note, please). For some TE members especilly children who may use that site it would`t be a good example to be shown there.
Let to do it in the parades but not showing those scenes through the free internet !

First look disgusting, but the second one makes me think if tolerance could be widespread in any situation.
One should think kids might look at he photo and try to do that. Yes second look is disgusting too...
Frank photo frank critique.
joeXmaspunk (6) 2007-04-25 23:16
Even if this was heterosexual couple, I do not think this has anything to do with tolerance. It has to do with the lack of manners. If I was to go to a homecoming parade, would I want to see the king and queen french kissing.
As for the photo. Yeah! Great slice-of-life. Gross! Yes! But LIFE is not pretty.

Hi Ishai,
I am not going to read all the critiiques, so I may repeat some of them. I like the photo as it captures a slice of life. Frankly, if it were taken anywhere else BUT a pride parade, I believe it would be a kind of voyeurism. However, from what I have seen of gay pride parades, this is the kind of behaviour that happens. I think this has captured it quite well. It seems quite predictable to see this kind of behaviour from a group of people who are very often kept "in the closet" for 364 days of the year and I think, if it were me, I would want to let lose a little too. Congratulations on your bravery for posting. Well done. Cheers, Paul.

i hope in my country as well, gay people will find a better behaviour from the part of the State and society.Eventhough Greece is a country with long "gay" history in the past, in ancient times, new greeks have nothing to do with ancient greeks. The society stays hypocritical, the Orthodox church racist(!) and State is looking somewhere else...trying to keep distances.I think that the same God, all over the World, no matter whuch name has, made everyone of us with the same love and understanding.
