Photographer's Note

In the picture, I captured a feast of cows in Appenzell on September 14, 2019. The cows had a holiday and were coming down from the pastures. Appenzell is said to have the same number of cows as humans. This is an old habit that it still maintains. The landscape here is undulating and covered with juicy grass and a shed at every step. Cows usually spend 10 weeks on pasture and then it is the herdsmen's task to find all the cows so that none of them wander. About this celebration children have time off at school. The festival has precise rules, inherited for generations. The chief shepherd goes forward, followed by three leading cows and then four decorated men, and then the whole herd. Three young men run around him trying to keep the herd on the way.
