Photographer's Note

There are two organizations in England which are administering a vast majority of tourist attractions in the country: English Heritage and National Trust. By becoming a member one has a free entrance to the numerous heritage sites. After moving to England it was quite obvious for me that I would like to participate in this Nobel cause as I am usually quite interested in all local attractions. I have been a member of English Heritage for 1.5 year and I have really enjoyed it. Facing the increase of living costs I was however forced to cancel my membership. On one of the last day of my membership I have visited Mount Grace Priory (in this photo, see also WORKSHOP photo for another POV).

Mount Grace Priory, in the parish of East Harlsey, North Yorkshire, England, within the North York Moors National Park, is today the best preserved and most accessible of the ten medieval Carthusian houses (charterhouses) in England. Set in woodlands, it was founded in 1398 by Thomas Holland, 1st Duke of Surrey, the son of King Richard II's half-brother Thomas, Earl of Kent, it was the last monastery established in Yorkshire, and one of the few founded anywhere in Britain in the period between the Black Death (1349�50) and the Reformation. It was a fairly small establishment, with space for a prior and twenty-three monks. The priory was closed in 1539 during the dissolution of the monasteries by King Henry VIII.

Hi Mariusz
For the little work I know of the national trust from being in Northern Ireland, they do an amazing job and this picture just goes to show that perfectly. A beautiful ruined abbey, and you took a brilliant composition. The abbey on the third soars up into a beautiful blue sky, and with the golden light falling on it, it looks superb. The green and blue combination works so nicely too, reminding us lush and verdant these islands really are!

Fine view of Mount Grace Priory, in partial ruin yet impressive walls and tower still standing. The resolution and natural lighting enhance the rock construction details and textures.

Cześć Mariusz, Szkoda, ze musiałes zrezygnować z członkostwa. Ładne ruiny, chyba bardziej podoba mi się zdjęcie z Workshopu, ale obydwa sa znakomite. I miałes świetna pogodę na tę wycieczke.

Y began with this post because it has a so , so personal note not complaining about weather by cost, a pity you can afford them to have acces at such interesting places
More, without disturbing people to clone out
Interesting and informative note to introduce the ruins capture
Like the way you composed it, natural colors and contrast with the green vegetation and a path going to the very back
I understand well it closed and was empty since 1539?
Good to live in a country so full of history and old buildings, for sure you will find good ones out of the National Trust

Czesc Mariusz,
mieszkajac w Anglii nie sposob nie natrafic na kolejne ruiny czy to kosciola czy zamku. Te zostaly ladnie uchwycone z odpowiednio obranego punktu i dobrze skomponowane z caloscia. Bardzo soczysta zielen konrastuje z murami opactwa i dodaje zycia zdjeciu.
Bardzo dobra ostrosc i ladne swiatlo.

Hello Mariusz,
I have a little preference for the picture in the workshop. I like the view in its vertical format very much. However the main picture shows the ruins of the monastery also very well and quite impressive. On both pictures you included something to fill the foreground, flowers or remnants of a wall. And on both pictures the ruins bath in a beautiful sunlight.

Le rovine delle vecchie abbazie hanno sempre un grande fascino e la presenza del verde che le circonda le rende pi� attraenti.

Hello Mariusz,

I agree with you, if you can afford the cost, membership of English Heritage or National Trust are well worth the expense. The cost of visiting Fountains Abbey with a family, costs about a third of a year's subscription!

I haven't visited this abbey but it does look interesting. Is it difficult to get to?

Your photograph uses good approach lines and suggests the extent of the abbey before it became a ruin. The light is lovely, enhancing the honey colour of the stones.
I must admit, I prefer your w/s photograph, which is more compact and dramatic.
Not to worry, we all have our own preferences of style. A few people preferred my w/s inclusion a few days ago!

You are so lucky to have playgrounds like this! All those ruins, you could spend a lifetime and still not see them all! An excellent wide-angle shot of the ruins and the complex. I like how you have shot it on the diagonal, using the foundations on the right foreground as an anchor for the shot. Well done and thanks for sharing this unique and characteristic building with us.

A crisp formation of the ancient relic here - they dont build them like that any more and this helps me to imagine what things would of been like back in a time when these buildings would of been so impressive. I love the condensed history you provide, it's superbly captured in a peaceful setting taken from a well considered viewpoint quietly contrasted by the appealing green with good detail of the stonework. Extremely a very rest full place and calm seems to ooze out of this image, so very well captured documentary shot. Congrats, TFS

looking at the WS photo, this was certainly the better option, the light is too harsh on the other photo.
gotta get the best light and sight lines right!

Too bad you had to cancel your membership, seems like a good membership to have - maybe you'll get it back soon :)

I know I say it alot, but just try to imagine this building brand new on the day it was completed!
wow...that a sight that must have been.

Hundreds of years ago when these Cathedrals, Castles, mansions..etc...were being built, i wonder if they KNEW just how stunning and beautiful they were. Or as it just another castle, just another cathedral???

anyways, fine photo with beautiful exposure! spot on.
wouldn't change anything to it at all.

Its an amazing fact, that there are many roofless old churchs throughout England, Mariusz.
I had seen so many when we visited in 8/1993, and also here on TE.
Wooden roof would not last through time as the rest of the edifice, and maybe, lucky for photographers, those offered a unique subject to take pictures of.
A fine shot, the green surrounding addind charm to the whole.

Great composition, showing us these fantastic well this priory, in his day, must have been a sensational judging from its ruins monument, pity that England is littered with magnificent ruins how are this, by the absurd religion or power struggles .....

Hello Mariusz,

The medieval English monasteries, all victims of Henry VIII's famous move to dissolve them, points to how power can corrupt and absolute power can corrupt absolutely. The whims and vagaries of the notorious King were recently analyzed in the Oxford Alumni magazine as psychopathic and sociopathic. At least the buildings stand in these skeletal forms as monuments to a disgraceful period. You've given us a superb expansive view of the structure against a clear early June sky.

The workshop picture is a good idea...what is surprising is that the tower looks bigger in that post. I liked the FG here and how you created this shot...Ruins are never easy to photograph...but you do it admirably
