Photographer's Note
The light looked good so we went to Mount Grace Priory for some different images from the ones I got last time. In particular there is an unusual artwork cross I wanted a photo of. Disappointingly in the immediate priory grounds there was no decent light as the sun was too low in the sky and was still behind the trees on the hillside at 12:00. Only 6 days to go until the shortest day, that was as high as the sun was going to get for a few weeks.
We spent some time exploring the wider grounds and came across this half frozen pond. You can see the difference in clarity of the reflections where the ice has not melted. Behind the hedge you can see frost still on the grass.

Hello Kath,
Wish the grass in the foreground was also frozen, that would bring a more winter scenery in front. The pond looks nice and peaceful, but that old tree is my favorite part in the image, that one looks very interesting. Nice colour balance in the sky, a bit dark on the left suits the picture well...
Have a nice day, Henk

Hello Kath,
This is a very nice alternative image. I like the viewpoint across the lake and the contrasting reflections. The whole scene benefits from a nice ambient light resulting in pleasing unsaturated colours.

Hi Kath,
A very peaceful and quiet sort of feel as I look at this fine image. You caught it in good light and the ice on the pond is an indicator of the temperatures these days. Great shot and TFs. Gerald

Hi Kath,
Even though it's a bit shy at this time of the year your subject is well in the light but there is something strange in the overall brightness impression, I guess it comes from the way the frozen pond reflects the light and makes the sky look even more colorless. Quite cold impression indeed, weren't you supposed to fly to warm places around now ?
Have a nice day,
Jean-Yves

Hello Kath,
I like the strenght and the simplicity of this image, only the small pond surrounded with nature, with a bit of frost and a weak light that offers us a very special and attractive color.
The branches of the trees and the reflections in the almost frozen water have a good graphism and work very well aesthetically.
Nice and interesting work.
Best wishes,

Hi Kath,
Yes there are days when the light calls you out to play with your camera. In spite of your disappointment, you used the light well. The interplay of sunlight, shadows and reflections is very attractive. The strong structure of the trees balances the playful light. I didn't realize that ice would reflect.

Hi, Kath. the half frozen pond is there to prove it. It is winter, even though its effects are rather mild over here in Belgium. It is interesting to have a look at the way frost changes the reflections, making them less sharp, but nonetheless interesting. There is a good contrast between the grass in the foreground, which is still green, and the bare trees around the pond. The blue sky allows the architecture of the trees to stand out against it.

Hi Kath
The pond looks nice, frozen and peaceful, but that old tree is a favorite part in the image, that one looks very interesting. Nice colour balance in the sky, but somehow this one really does not appeal to me a lot Kath. Cannot pinpoint the exact reason, but I don't think this has the same quality as your immediate earlier shots.

Hi Kath,
It's a beautiful view. I guess Northern people will find this strange, but I feel it much wintry, because only in a rather cold Winter day I could get a similar view here.
The big tree on the left of the centre really stands up, but the light and the whole landscape is what makes the photo so special. The mix of frost and sun in the grass and on the water makes it unique and very attractive.

Kath, this is the very first time that I see the line of the ND grad in your shot. The top of the trees is darker than the lower parts. Is that a gradual line that you have in the filter or a sharp line? Do you have any other filters beside Lee? Any experience with Cokin, Singh-Ray or any other manufacturer? I'm looking out to get a new filter set for myself.

Hello Kath,
You've chosen an ideal vantage point for this photograph. With so much light, you are also able to get an extreme depth of field. The trees across the pond appear virtually as sharp as the grass in the foreground. And as you point out the reflection in the water is reduced where the ice sheet still prevails.
Warm regards,
Bulent

Hello kath
Nice place and light. but I'm a little disappointed by the shadows on this beautifull tree. it loook like unatural pp as a HDR pp for example. Perhaps it's ovther reason but it is a little if the light on sky was not in accordance with foreground and lake part.
Anyway, it doesn't really matter because I really love this tree.
Warm regards
