Colors of ?, a photo from North Yorkshire, England

Photographer's Note

When I recently visited Whitby, I searched for some blue and yellow theme which I could use as an excuse to show my support for Ukraine. Ironically, this scene which I found here is closer with its color theme to the flag of Russia than Ukraine. I have tried to convert the red color to yellow but I didn稚 manage to achieve a satisfactory effect, so I kept the colors as I found them.
Luckily for me red/white/blue are actually colors of many flags. It could be the national colors of Britain, United States, France, or Netherlands� In fact, when I read the legends on the origin of the colors of the present day flag of Russia, I found out that they may have been copied from the colors of the Dutch flag.

Towards the end of my walk along the Whitby harbour I eventually found a boat which displayed an actual Ukrainian flag but it was unfortunately located in a not very photogenic setting.

Hi Mariusz,
That is a superb colors combination with the bright ligfht enable a wonderful reflection of the two boats bows.
The wooden pier on left is a "reality-check" that added a sense of depth to the whole.
Excellent outcome.

marvelous colors and reflections here, with another frame it would be a graphic compo with an abstract mood. perfect.
yes these colors are very usual in many flags. in paraguay too.

Hello Mariusz, a small corner of the harbour nicely composed with the bright colours of the boats and the lovely reflections on the water.
I like the inclusion of the seaweed bedecked ladder and woodwork.
You obviously had a lovely sunny day for your outing.

Hello Mariusz,
I have always thought that these colours appear on so many flags, already on the flags of 4 of the 5 neighbouring countries of Belgium.
A little research taught me that those colours are indeed the most common on national flags.
Worldwide, no fewer than 155 national flags contain red, 144 white and 112 blue (68 times dark and 44 times light blue).
We therefore have enough choice not to have to think about Russia.
By the way, blue and white should be removed from the Russian flag so that only the red remains, the colour of unnecessary bloodshed.

Well spotted, these two boats next to one another with their very bright and contrasting colours. Also the reflections in the small ripples are amazing and create such a wonderful and artistic view all around the boats.

good sentiment for Ukraine but I don't think this would have worked as well with the yellow. The red and blue of the boats and reflection god very well together for a great photo.

Hello Mariusz,

No blue and yellow but a colour combination which works very effectively.
I really like this! I particularly like your crop which has placed the two prows and their reflections so close and united, whilst the step ladder makes a third feature and gives a sense of depth!
For me, it's a lovely composition.
I wonder if others on the quayside would have noticed it!

Red, white and blue are the flag colours of many great countries, including Australia, France, USA, UK, Netherlands, NZ, Malaysia, Iceland, Thailand, Slovakia, Luxembourg, Serbia, Croatia, Paraguay, Slovenia, Slovakia, Taiwan, Cambodia, Chile, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Fiji, Laos, Liberia, Nepal, Norway, Panama, Paraguay & Samoa. There is one deliberately absent. Make that 2. North Korea is the other Stalinist country. No prizes for guessing the country conspicuous by its absence.
