Photographer's Note
"they shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old.
age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
at the going down of the sun and in the morning
we will remember them".
part of a poem by laurence binyon that he called 'for the fallen'. it was first published in the times newspaper on 21 september 1914. it was written as a reaction to the high casualty rates of the british expeditionary force at mons and le cateauin the same year, but the four famous lines have now taken an existence of their own that apply to all war casualties.
remembrance day is observed on 11 november to recall the end of hostilities of world war I on that date in 1918.
this picture was taken earlier this evening at cranfield beach, on the shores of carlingford lough, county down, northern ireland, just as the sun disappeared behind the cooley mountains in the south of ireland.

Hello Brian,
How appropriate is your note and this serenely beautiful photograph at this time when we remember the fallen!
The beauty of this picture owes much to its sheer simplicity of features and composition. Just sea and sky - nothing else save for a single wave approaching the shore. But the subtlety of colours and textures is absolutely exquisite - the palette of soft colours in the sky from deep blues, through every shade of lighter blues to pink and orange - and the glorious sheen on the water's surface as it softly reflects the sky - and the softness of the water itself.
Technically, this picture is top notch with perfect exposure (no doubt aided by your use of ND and ND graduated filters and an extended exposure), fabulous colours and stunning sharpness.
I'm afraid that this is going to have to be another of your pictures which gets added to my favourites!
Beautiful!
Kind Regards,
John.

Gidday Brian
A title that makes you stand still and a photo to accompany the note which will stay with me all day. Those pastel colours are like a dream. It's ironic that your photo projects peace, tranquillity - and love. So different from the sentiments that were going on between 1914 and 1918. Those pastel colours are simply stunning, I adore them and I also adore the minimalism and atmosphere of the photo.
Warmest wishes
Lisa
PS: Thanks so much for this photo - and for your kind thoughts on my high horse photo. Don't worry mate, being half-Italian, half-Aussie, there's not much that keeps me cranky for more than an hour these days. All quiet on the Southern Front :)
Cheers
Lisa

Hello Brian - A breathtaking photograph and so appropriate as a commemoration for Armistice Day. The minimal composition with light, colour and texture being finely balanced and in complete harmony looks simple but, to get this right takes skill, vision and a finely tuned eye. Wonderful Brian, my compliments. Warm regards Rosemary

Hi Brian
Almost like dreamy seacape in even lighting condition. Very good pov giving more space for the cloud formation above. This is a fantastic shot, nothing much to look at, yet everything and the motion effect really makes tis shot delightful, kind of picture that conjures up for me images of seaside holidays. Well done Brian, TFS
Kind regards

Good Morning Brian,
This poem still brings a lump to my throat; it's almost as if it links all parts of my existence; I have known it forever but cannot remember when I first heard it!
Your photograph seems to carry that same existence; it goes on forever ....
I love the tranquility, the soft colours and, amazingly, the diagonal wave, which adds that special composition.
Thank you for this and have a lovely day,
Bev :-)
