Photographer's Note
It's been an incredibly long time since I last uploaded a photo here to TrekEarth. I've been busy setting up a business, learning to be a dad to my 11 month old daughter, and generally just getting on with life!
An even bigger change is that I've switched to Nikon :-) After much research, testing and discussion with colleagues I felt Nikon would meet my needs better. So I went ahead and sold all my Canon gear and had a fun shopping spree!
I thought I'd post a few recent images. This one here was taken this weekend on my first outing with a D200 and Tokina 12-24 F4 lens. We're having a last flurry of winter here. Temperatures down to -3c which is very rare in Shetland due to the temperate effects of the gulf stream.
This shot I guess is an exercise in exposure and texture. Camera meters have a tendency to underexpose snow as it gets fooled by all that brightness, leaving you with a dull, grey image. This shot was metered in A-priority with a compensation of +1.3 EV. An exposure of 1/10s @ F16 was bang on. From the moment I composed this I always planned for it to be black and white
Used a Hoya Pro-1D Polariser. Should have used an ND to reduce shutter speed and increase blur in water, but never mind!
For posting here I used a sharpenning technique posted on TE some time ago. I wanted to see if it made a good job of those branches, and given that it is at 72dpi, I think it's done quite well.
It's good to be back :-) I hope to see some old friends dropping by
Best
Craig
PS I'll update my equipment profile soon.

Hi Craig,
You did well with the W&B balance to me: good shades of grey, bright white and deep black.
I am not convinced by the composition though> why did you cropp the tree branches and why did you not used a PS tool to erase the unaesthetic electric pylons?
Welcome back ;O)
Pris.

Hi Craig.
Nice picture! I like your composition and I think it works really well in black and white. I also like the softness of the small stream at the left. As for the electric pylons, I think thats all down to personal taste. I would agree with yourself about their position on the horizon being good!
And I am complaining about the cold in Edinburgh, you must be freezing!

P.s. I have been using my dad's Canon 350d, but have been looking at different cameras (just for fun!) How do you like Nikon after using Canon? (I also like how you say the biggest change is the new Camera, not the 11 month old daughter or the new business!) :-)

howdy Craig!
Good to see you back in business, and congrat to the D-200.
You started up cool whit this very wintry image. Like that you've present it in BW as it works out very well in a graphical POV.
the Shetlands must be a wonderful time at winter from the eye of a photographer (just wear the right cloths and your are OK I Suppose)
