Photographer's Note
On our first full day in Scotland recently we walked from the village of Moulin near Pitlochry up to the top of Craigower Hill. Craigower translates as Goat痴 Crag and is looked after by the National Trust for Scotland. From the top on a clear day there are stunning views over Loch Fiskally looking south and Loch Tummel looking west.
It was one of those days when rain threatened and the views were hazy. However, on the way back, about 10 minutes away from the village, the sun made a brief appearance resulting in a rainbow over Baledmund Castle. It痴 the first time I have had my camera at the ready when there was a rainbow.
I managed to get four shots before it disappeared and couldn稚 decide between two which to post. I think this one has the best composition because of the position of the castle and the line of foreground trees, but the rainbow is better in the one in the WS.
Incidentally, if you have 」2750 to spare you can rent the castle for the weekend. ;D
I知 not too confidant about the map co-ordinates as there isn稚 a close enough zoom of the area, but if you zoom out you can see roughly how to get there.

Hello Kath,
The dark brooding sky makes a great contrast with the nicely lit landscape below. Excellent colour contrasts with very good clarity. The rainbow is indeed a bonus; I take it you didn't find a crock of gold, then you could rent the castle :-)

Hallo Kath!
Even thought the rainbow is a bit weak one can "fathom" it. Nevertheless, even without it your photo shows a really beautiful scenery in a great light and this threatening sky adds alot to the atmosphere of this picture. Yes, hiking there must be great ...

Hi Kath. First and somewhat shy. It's the sunlit landscape that I find attractive with its variety of greens and browns. The white castle stands out nicely. The background range frames the trees dramatically. Lovely composition. Regards. Klaudio.

Hi Kath,
Nice photo, very pastoral with the added bonus rainbow! I do like this one better than the WS, even though the rainbow is brighter in that one. I also really enjoyed your Loch Tummel WS - I don't think that was anywhere near a low quality shot, it looks like art to me. This one has such great lighting and you took advantage of it very well.
Thanks!

Hola kath.
The rainbow is a good addition to your wonderful photo but what but it calls to me the attention is the beauty of the landscape with precious autumn colors and a great view of the white and black castle in the middle of the forest. Again despite the cloudy day with a dark grey sky you got good light in the area.
Good work.

Hi, Kath.
Two outstanding posts. The workshop has a better visible rainbow, but having to choose I'll go for this one, as it's got the best composition, indeed, and superb overall balance. Striking lighting display against a gloomy background, the castle, that unique landscape and atmosphere... it looks to me like all the ingredients are right where they ought to be. A great effort, in all possible respects! Have a nice evening, looking forward to what you'll come up with next. Cheers,
Fulvio,

Hi, Kath. The contrast between the foreground and the grey sky works very well and is emphasized by the filter you have used. The castle is another source of contrast and it stands well out against the forest. It's the good time of year to include it in the picture; I guess it disappears behind the foliage of the trees a little later in the year. The rainbow is a little faint, but it adds something to the ambience.
Have a nice evening,

Hi Kath,
I am glad that you caught such a great light, even if it was just for short periods. The great quality of it compensates for the low quantity. The sunny yellow/green FG is very attractive, ad makes a fine contrast with the dark sky. The castle and its surroundings are sooooo charming... And, like the cherry on the top of the cake, there is the rainbow.
I like the WS's also. I agree that rainbow of #1 is better, but overall I prefer this one, namely because of the compo. The #2 is effective showing the grandiose, wild, beauty of the landscape and the haze gives it a "taste of Scotland", a land where I have never been, but I am used to imagine just like that. The light and visibility were surely very adverse, because it's not obvious the PP you had to do.
I think I only photographed a rainbow once, on the same day of my post downpour approaching. You have just gave me an idea to my next post. :-)
I have to see if I can join a group of 16 to rent it for a WE: :D

Hi Kath,
This is very nice. I think the gentle view of the rainbow suites the quiet and peaceful landscape. The greens and golds contrast beautifully, and the fence cutting across the frame in the foregroud add a strong sense of depth. Very well done and TFS. Gerald

Hello Kath,
You have really spotted this one!
There is something unbelievably magic about the light when rainbows appear. The grass takes on a lovely irridescence which you have captured beautifully.
As you say, the castle is so well positioned and the fence line creates a distict f/g. The rainbow, well, it's just the icing on the cake!
Kind regards,
Bev :-)
Much as I'd love to rent the castle, I'm afraid it's beyond my budget!

Hello Kath,
I like this nice Scotch landscape under the special light of the cloudy and gray day, but that it offers us its wonderful colors, and the effect of the rainbow on it.

Hi Kath,
Congratulations on your rainbows, they sure are tricky aren't they? I've long tried for a good rainbow without much success. I agree with your choice for primary because the framing gives a more pastoral and balanced feeling. Both rainbows are nice.
You did excellent work in making your loch shot work; of course you couldn't have rescued it if you had not framed such interesting layers and angles first. Still it's never quite as much fun as when the light is super!!
Yesterday, when I discovered that you had a new post, I discovered that I was out of the coin of the realm. So as always, I'm late.

Hi Kath
I guess I've got an advantage over you there. I get rainbows with decent scenery in the foreground from my balcony ;-)
Anyway, I the contrast between the green and gold fields and the dark clouds is dramatic. The rainbow is nicely placed to balance with the castle.
The castle seems a bit expensive to rent. I once stayed in one near Dornoch which was converted into a youth hostel so it was quite a bit cheaper :-)

Hello Kath
The colours are fantastic, the green grass contrasts with the yellow (flowers or just ripened grass?) with a sprinkling of autumn colours on the trees under a dark sky. Yes the rainbow comes out better in the WS shot, but this is better in all other aspects. Good work!

WS is the better rainbow, IMO. The completeness of the arch and the lighting makes this one a keeper. Just my to cents. Has Rob considered taking "Whispering Wendy" on your walks? I am sure you can get coordinate readouts from her screen. Both are well done.

So, congratulations for your first rainbow, Kath. Sometimes we see it, but its not easy to do a nice photo, specially because its not easy to do a nice composition for it. Here, the composition is the best part. The photo could be excellent even without the rainbow, because you've found a great site, full of yellows and greens and also with a house well positioned. The lights are great! Excellent work!
Wishing you many rainbows in your life,

Hello Kath, A very faint one but it is still a rainbow you have & this is one more than me. At 2750 ponds It think I would be looking at a BB. A beautiful winter scene, well balanced with excellent colour, under that threatening sky it looks as though the sun was shinning quite brightly, the rainbow is the icing on the cake. The also liked your WS versions but for me this is the pick.
Thanks
Take care
