Photographer's Note
It痴 a while since I posted an image from Saltburn. Summer is a good time to catch both sunrise and sunset on the beach, as because of the lie of the land they both occur over the sea when sunrise is closest to NE and sunset is closest to NW. However on this evening, the promised beautiful sunset didn稚 materialise, but the wet sand was making a good surface to reflect the cloud patterns in the sky. I stood on the pier for a higher POV to catch the reflections better.
The yellow building is the Ship Inn, perfectly placed for a cold beer on a hot day. It was also perfectly placed for smuggling in the 18th century. John Andrew was the Ship Inn landlord in the 1780s and was also nicknamed the 適ing of Smugglers. On the top of the cliff and slightly to the right of the Ship Inn you can see the Coastguard Cottages. It痴 quite ironic that John Andrew was able to carry out his smuggling trade right under the coastguards noses.
I marked the Ship Inn on the map. (link right) The pier on which I was standing is on the left. The sun was setting behind me under the clouds. :(

Hi Kath,
the images of Saltburn and Whitby in your gallery made me wanted to see these places and this image is another strong motivation.
Very beautifully composed impression with a fantastic atmosphere (luckily the sunset did not materialise!). Wonderful reflections and very moody colors. My compliments!

These chlidren give an interetsing element of life and an idea of the csale of the place. Excellent managment of light give beautiful contrats and plesant garphic effect in the water on the beach.

Hello Kath,
The late evening sky and the people playing on the beach bring a particular atmosphere to this fine composition. The inn is well placed in the frame with its yellow tones complementing those of the wet beach. Sunsets like this case often make better photographic subjects than 'full-blow' ones and this is the case here.

Hello Kath,
As always, you interest us with your notes as well as your photograph.
The sunset may not have appeared but the light in the sky has added a pleasing, glasslike texture to the wet sand.
The little family group adds interest, and scale whilst being perfectly placed in the shot. They also provide good balance to the inn and cottages.
The whole shot is beautifully composed, following the rule of thirds.
Have a lovely Sunday,
Bev :-)

Hi Kath,
it seems to be a suitable place for a romantic "hand in hand" sunset walk....provided that the sunset should feature some burning and vivid tones.
somebody says the human presence is necessary for having a good compo, thus providing it with a eye-catcher....in my poor opinion this shot would also work with nobody there....just nature, loneliness...and romantic mood.

Hi Kath,
As disappointing as this sunset might have been to you, the picture you got out of it is far from being disappointing to me. The few colored houses nestled at the bottom of the hill, the water reflections, those eye-catching characters in the foreground and the diffused light make for a beautiful scene, no contest.
See you soon with pictures from...Scotland I guess ;-)

Hi Kath.
The ND filter has been well used here to control the brightness in the sky, and the result is a terrific photo and very pleasing composition, with the figures and buildings making a nice diagonal and conveyor of depth. Great place for a pub, I think. I like the velvet sheen on the water and the slightest hint of pink and blue in the sky. Very nicely done and an interesting note.

Hello Kath! A wonderful moment with this family playing at the beach. We all loved this, being with our parents at the beach, playing, trying out, getting wet, looking for sea shells, and so much fun for the parents too. A beautiful composition, the landscape is amazing too, but it is this family down there that makes the composition outstanding. LOVE it!!! Have a wonderful Sunday ... Barbara.

Wonderfully attractive picture!
The level of sharpness is totally suitable to this image and the management of light is just perfect!
The pov was greatly chosen and the composition - the highlight here - is quite effective and trully successful and eye-catching with those people's silhouettes on the left bottom corner, the reflections on the wet sand, the cliffs and buildings with low light too and the last sun rays up in the sky!
TFS - congratulations!

Disappointing sunset perhaps, but a very good constructed image all the same. The playing children in the left corner, next to the sky-reflecting wet expanse of sand and the sombre mass of cliff nicely contratsed by the yellow buildings and the slightly overexposed sky. Nicely done, Kath, I like it a lot.

Good morning Kath -
Regardless of the quality of the sunset it is the quality of light that you captured here. There is that warm feel, soft reflections of the sky, and the joy of being at the shore that makes this image. I can just hear the gentle slapping of the water and the laughs of the children play on the sand. Just a few more minutes of this beautiful light and then a stroll to the inn for a nice pint. Well done!
Thank you for sharing.

Hi, Kath -
A rather strange title for a lovely photo. There is great clarity of light and color here, and the reflections in the water, of both the people and the sky, are exquisite. And there is drama in the sky as well. While sunsets are not as easy to capture as people sometimes think, they are often pretty obvious, and I think it takes more skill to make something out of the less obvious, such as you did here.
Have fun in Skye,
Dan

Of different aspects of weather colours of sunset are probably one of the hardest things to forecast.
Here reflections on wet sand make rather ordinary colours something spectacular. It is like some notalgic postcard. Good framing, people on one corner and the inn on another make composition dynamic.

Hi, Kath. I think the element that makes the picture are the three people on the beach. They add life in it and give a good balance to the composition, creating a good diagonal line with the inn. As you say, the reflections on the beach were the reward for the trip. I also like the way the clouds open out to give way to some blue sky in the centre of the picture.

A well-deserved attention and rewards for this beautiful scene with subdued colours. The cute yellow houses are cleverly balanced with the kids playing on the opposite corner.

Maybe the sunset was disappointing but not certainly the picture you are showing us! The seascape is so charming and as you said the clouds refections compensate the missing sunset.
The composition is well studied: those three figures at the left match the houses at the right creating an invisible diagonal, and at the same time they enhance the sense of depth of this fine beach. Apart from that a good picture is above all the atmosphere it evokes, and this is surely one I like.

Ol Kath, nice graphic approach in WS. The only thing I miss there is the human presence ;-) So this main image with the mom and daughters perfectly placed at left appeals more to me. They make a good diagonal with the yellow buildings while the show of reflections on the wet sand makes the photo a great photo. They seem like walking on water. It might have been a disapointing sunset for you but on the other hand you got a wonderful capture of nature with people making part of it.

Hi Kath,
Don't tell me that you are taking a break now that I ended my own. :-)
I really don't find this a disappointing sunset. Original, yes, but perhaps that makes it more special. Besides the light and its reflection on the wet sand, I like the compo very much, very tidy, elegant, well balanced. I suspect that it was a very complicated light situation, it doesn't look easy getting such a good exposure on the cliff without completely burning out the sky, but you achieved a very natural result. The image is very relaxing, it gives a pleasant sense of tranquillity, with the children giving a touch of peaceful joy.
As usual, the WS is also a great photo. I like the graphics, with the human made shapes challenging the natural shapes of the cliff behind, the revolving sea and the light.

Hola Kath ---------------->
In my opinion it is one of your best photos....
Since I heard in a conversation once,
to do sceneries is phenomenal but if also
you do that something happens in him
(for insignificant that is),
better. In this case, this family enjoying
the solitary beach they give an excellent touch in
the photo, with this dream scenery to the fund.
Un abrazo.
♥
