Hello Brian,

This is a wonderfully aesthetic picture and so relaxing to view. I could have this on my wall and sit and stare at it for hours: it's almost hypnotic with its wonderful and almost imperceptible gradations of colour from mauves to yellows and blues and greens and with such soft contrasts. The lighting is superb and wonderfully subtle, no doubt aided by your wise choice of filters.

P.S. Perhaps I'm overly timid, but I always feel uncomfortable shooting more or less directly into the sun: and if I try it, I always end up with horrendous lens flare. How do you manage in a case such as this - I should have thought the addition of three filters would have greatly increased the chances of flare and reflections?

P.P.S. Silly me - I should have looked at your exposure details before writing that bit - I see that it must have been very dim (like me) if you needed a 15 second exposure!

P.P.P.S. (Getting fed up of editing this critique).... Still, even if the light is low, you can still get flare if one part of the image is very much brighter than the rest, so I guess my question wasn't that silly after all.

Hello Brian,

I find this an eye-catching shot.
At first, it appeared like a bale of silk which had been stretched across the frame.
As you scrutinise it, you notice, the changes in hue, the slight ripples and tiny waves in the sea, whilst the sky has totally different colour changes.
I found myself looking at this for minutes, a most unusual amount of time! It has the same qualities as some abstract paintings which seem to go on, and on, making you think what may be beyond!

Hello Brian - The subtle colour shifts and minimal composition are truly lovely. You have managed to create a good feeling of movement in the FG with the slow shutter speed and although there is no strong focal point the sea and skyscape is a mesmerising image. ACCIDENTI CHE FOTO! Which roughly translates in Italian to "holy sh*t what a photo!":)

This is one of the most beautiful seascapes I've seen here in ages. It has everything a photographer could wish for: beautiful soft dreamy colour, the smooth effect on the sea of the long exposure, minimalism and an atmosphere so tranquil I can actually feel my blood pressure dropping. Congratulations on this, it's such a pleasure viewing it.

By the way, I just read your "confession" out to my husband, about buying the lens whilst the wife's overseas. That's hilarious. Until recently, I'd convinced himself that my Canon 30D was the same camera as my 5D - until he busted me and saw the 2 cameras together. Hahahaha.

hmmm..a Grad filter, i don't have one of those.
Was this the circular type filter, or the sheet of Glass type. these filters interest me, but i need to learn more about them first.
whatever effect you used here, it looks great.
its mystical.

Simplicity can be so beautiful but not easy to achieve well in a photo. You managed very well indeed. The centre of the light in the sky is perfectly off-centre. Glorious colours. Brilliantly managed in the taking.
