LANIMERS PROCESSION, 2011
This week, in the town of Lanark where we live, is "Lanimer Week", a week of festivity, celebration and processions through the streets of the town. But, like so many events, Covid-19 has sadly caused "Lanimers" to be cancelled completely this year.
So here are just three little photographs from the "Lanimer Day" procession down Lanark's High Street in June, 2011. There were different bands, bagpipes and groups of children as well as many lorries or wagons dressed up as "floats". But here we see part of the parade led by a couple of elderly gentlemen in a early petrol driven "dog cart" probably dating from around 1900; then a rather smart brass band and, finally, a group of young schoolchildren dressed, I think, as rather colourful spinning tops. Just a little selection of shots I took that year.
Location co-ordinates here: 55.673631, -3.778005

And for those interested in this tradition:
Lanark is one of the oldest Royal Burghs in Scotland, its Charter being granted in 1140 by King David I (1124-1153). One of the conditions attached was that the Burgesses of the town were required to examine their "March" or boundary stones every year and report back that all was well or ill according to what they had found. Lanark is probably unique among the Royal Burghs in that it has carried out this duty every year since it was first imposed. This duty of the Land Marches soon became an annual celebration - "The Lanimers".
What started as a simple duty soon turned into an annual festival including horse racing on Lanark Moor with music by the town drummer and minstrel. By the 17th Century members of the Burgh Council were competing for the honour of carrying the Burgh flag or standard. Until 1834 the Burgh Council and Deacons of Crafts took it in turns to appoint the Lord Cornet - the Standard Bearer. From 1834-1974 the Provost & Magistrates alone chose the Lord Cornet. Since 1974 a Committee has chosen the Lord Cornet, that group comprising of representatives of the Lanimer Committee, the Guildry, District and Community Councillors and the Lord Cornets' Club.
Processions, with decorated vehicles started in the 19th Century, and gradually developed into the colourful affair that Lanark has today. Much of this dates back to 1893 when the first Lanimer Queen, Grace Adams, was appointed. At present the Lanimer Queen is elected by her peers, in rotation from six schools, Lanark Grammar, Robert Owen Primary, Lanark Primary, St Mary's Primary, New Lanark Primary and Kirkfieldbank Primary.

Hi John,
great series of photos from this charming event.
I am sure people will miss it and you must be a big fun of it yourself if you remember the exact day.
It certainly provides a lot of colorful photo opportunities and brings in some joy to people's lives.
Let's hope next year everything will be back to normal.
Excellent reportage,

hello dear John, You also give us three pictures for the price of one :). Such collage is a good opportunity to show more photos without opening new tabs. Some people are lazy and they do not that. :). Marvellous photos. Where were you standing, on the street? I like all these pictures. In the upper one, a lovely view of the old car, probably more than 100 years old. And in the background, the Scottish band. the children couldn't be more colourful. have you ever won't in this parade? Wonderful photos.
Best regards MAlgo

Hello John,
These photos are as bright and colourful and joyful as your last upload, and would have been just as socially and medically unsuitable this year.
"Fings ain't wot they used t'be". I guess that is Cockney and very unsuitable for Lanark, but it expresses the strong feelings most of us have these days.
By presenting these photos as a triptych you made sure they would all be seen even by those who never watch workshops. Smart idea: ;-)
I wish you a nice weekend.
Gert
PS Thank you for your latest comments. I suppose the Tuareg men in Mopti knew they looked "exotic" to foreigners and tried to use that for an extra income.

Hello John,
This is a very attractive and colourful montage of the Lanimers. There may not be a parade, this year but this will keep the festival high-profile for the next time.
You have shown us a delightful variety of the types of things which take part in the parade and how good that we can see them all so clearly, at one go.
The photographs are taken from different aspects but each shows excellent details of the subjects featured.
Is there a section for vintage cars or was this one special to lead the parade.
Would you be able to enter your car which is very photographic in its own right. But, then you would b not be able to photograph! Oh ... decisions, decisions!
Thanks for sharing this; the photographs are very well taken and great fun, Bev :-)

Hello John
3 pictures in one to decribe the feast with the different bands walking in front of the Lanark citizen (and other I suppose). It's a good habit to keep the old traditions live, the world seems to become so uniform. And of course, you can't miss to take the photograph of the old car!
Have a nice sunday

A wonderful compilation, with I see three generations, young to older.

Hello John,
Three excellent photo to give an idea of what the procession looks like. You present to us three very different parts of the procession: the beautiful old car, the brass band and the very colourful schoolchildren. Very well captured with the spectators also providing a very nice backdrop in all three of the photos.

Hi John,
Excellent triptych of photos from this local festival. The automobile certainly looks ancient, great to see it moving. Brass band is very stylish. And children have weird and wonderful costumes.

Hello John, three in one, a lovely treat!
Any one could have been a main post.
You were stood in just the right place, as I get the impression that the street is situated on a gentle slope, so you get the benefit of viewing more of what is to come.
Your timing was perfect, obviously the procession is on the move, but no blur in sight.
The sharp quality is excellent throughout all three pictures.
The celebrations (fingers crossed for everything that has had to be cancelled this year,) will be even more enjoyable in 2021!
Kind regards, Jean.

Hello John,
Maybe here the title fits: "Fortunately we still have the pictures" because for now we have to do it for this kind of festivities with the past.
There is much to enjoy on this magnificent triptych.
Picture 1: Very special that as a pensionado you drive a car that is older than yourself. 😉
Picture 2: They probably play great but have to practice to walk in step. 😉
Picture 3: Bad example to make these sweet children walk around like colourful targets. 😉
Excellent presentation.
Have a good weekend. Be careful and stay safe, Rob

Brilliant choice of photos to make this wonderful triptych showing various parts of the procession and people of all ages enjoying the event. You captured the mood of the festivities so well that we can feel it by just looking at the photos. Again, the composition and colours in all three images are great.

Hi John.
The three photographs are very beautiful and happy, which give us a good idea of the joy with which these festivities are lived, with marching bands and parades for both children and vintage cars, and there will surely be a tasting market and small purchases. .
The color and light management are magnificent, highlighting the beauty and sharpness of the image.
Very well done. I like it
Enjoy the weekend.
Very best regards.
Luis.

Hi John
Ok, two things here...first...I play the Trumpet and yes, as embarrassing as it is to say, I was in a marching band for 4 years and we marched in numerous parades...sigh...not exactly the coolest thing to attract the ladies...buy hey :) So that second photo of the marching band caught my attention :)
The other thing is that car...i bet you'd want that in your garage wouldn't you! I want to see more of that Dog Cart/car. How interesting is that. and the colurful spinning circles are the icing on the cake. Love it
cheers
Craig
