Photographer's Note
Hello Everyone,
Please open in New Tab.
I wonder if you will find this old building in Trawden as interesting as I do.
This is a lovely house now but at one time it was the Cooperative Society Shop, a much valued premises. You can tell from its size that it was a very important shop for such a small village! (The building behind is the St. Mary's Church.)
Robert Owen (17711858) is considered as the father of the cooperative movement. A Welshman who made his fortune in the cotton trade, Owen believed in putting his workers in a good environment with access to education for themselves and their children.
The Cooperative movement spread quickly in the north of England and 1886 a Cooperative Society Shop was opened in Colne, a nearby town. It took until 1935 before this shop in Trawden joined them.
The Cooperative movement was very important to working families. Money spent at the shop earned a dividend, a share of the accumulated profits, which were paid out twice a year.
Thank you for your interest, I will add a different view of the building as a workshop, Bev :-)

Hello Beverley,
It was easy to fine this building on Colne Rd. at Google-Map (53.8435, -2.137 on the map), but wonder why did the planters had dissappeared, as appeared on the stones wall in front and shown on the virtual tour?...
Elegant big manion English typical, corner POV was well chosen.
Cheers and good afternoon,
Ike

Hello Bev,
The Cooperative movement was very big in Sweden too, and still is to some extent, but learning about it at school it was mainly the workers in Rochdale we were taught about. This is a quite beautiful building, obviously well maintained, and at a quick glance it almost looks like it has an attached church tower (at a strange angle). I imagine the gable windows are fairly new. You had a very good light from this angle, and it's a very sharp and attractive photo.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hello Beverley,
A good angled pov on the Co-op Building showing 2 facades, one in shadow and the other in sunlight. The pot plants make a showy display along the right side and the lichen and moss encrusted black tower in the bg makes an interesting focal point. Tfs!

Hello Beverley, only the other day I was talking about the Co-operative Society to my son, explaining the concept of the dividends.
This is a lovely stone building, and has been beautifully adapted into a house/houses.
Taken from a good angle, the church fills the space in the background, adding further interest.
Kind regards, Jean.

Hi Bev,
The subject is well framed. The point of view is showing the details of the house and of the bell tower of trhe church. The light is giving good colors rendering. Have a nice day.

Hi Beverley
Wonderful old building and great use of the light and shadows. This looks like a huge building - the angle you've taken the photo makes it look imposing in keeping with the style and age of the building. You've coped the exposure very well, great colours and detail of this interesting architecture. It has a vintage feel to it....
Best regards

Hi Bev
A good photo of this impressive ex-shop. The only blot on the building are the modern (presumably double glazed) white windows.
cheers

Hi Bev,
Interesting architecture style, good angle to take the photo and very well managed for the light capture and rendering with these contrasts between sunlight and shades, perfect sharpness too, tfs.

Hi Bev,
is it the same as the COOP shops?
You had a lovely light at this spot and you selected a great angle. The resulting geometry is interesting. I like the church tower appearing behind as well.
The sky has good mixture of clouds as blue sky but most importantly everything is nicely lit.
Quite an interesting story as well.
Very well done,
M

Hello Beverley,
I like that the house was built in the same stone as the high wall behind it and the church.
A certain uniformity gives places much more charm. At least that's how I see it.
Presented from a good angle in a slightly upwards view.
Best regards, Paul

Hello Beverley,
A very nice combination of this large stone house with the small tower right behind it. Also the green parts are well included. The light was perfect and added a nice play of shadows around the building.

I liked the combination of the old building and the tower of the church ahead. nice details of local architecture.
my state of paran got many cooperatives during the military period, at first they were dedicated to coffee and nowadays they are more centered in grains, one of them (COAMO) is the second largest company in my state after energy company and ahead of the giant paper company. problem with cooperatives are the bad administration in many cases.
take care
jorge
